The Americano cocktail is a fizzy, bittersweet drink with Italian origins. It's the perfect aperitivo before dinner or a refreshing sipper on a warm day. Recipe yields 1 drink.

Americano Cocktail

Campari

sweet vermouth,

club soda*

orange,

Fill a tall glass with ice. Pour in the Campari and sweet vermouth, then gently pour the club soda into the glass at a 45-degree angle to preserve the bubbles. 

Gently stir with a spoon, and garnish with a slice of orange. Serve at once.

This is a stunningly refreshing summer sipper. My rule has become if C&amp;K say drink it, I do. But I was already a Campari lover, so this was an easy decision.  My mother gave me my first sip at age 12 after which I became determined to acquire the taste. So I know this posting is useful in making distinctions. Last year a dear friend asked me to read his first novel and I was embarrassed for him, but nevertheless, told him an Americano is not a Campari soda, as his hero thought.  Nor is it a Campari spritz. Maybe…a Negroni light.  BTW, my wife tasted her first Campari in Venice “having what they’re having,” and has moved on to become a Negroni aficionado. (The best is Sam Fowler’s at Olive or Twist, Portland, OR.)  But whatever your leanings, light or heavy, put this one in your rotation.
