Apple strudel recipe

Step 1

1. Preheat the oven to 180C and lightly grease a baking tray. Put the apple, lemon juice, sultanas, sugar, cloves and breadcrumbs in a large bowl, and mix well. Combine the almonds and cinnamon in a separate bowl.

2. Lay one sheet filo pastry horizontally on a work surface and brush with melted butter. Lay another sheet over it so that it overlaps the first sheet on the edge furthest from you by 5cm. Brush the second sheet then sprinkle with a quarter of the almond mixture. Repeat until you have used all the filo and almond mixture.

3. Place the apple mixture along the edge closest to you, leaving a 4cm border on three sides. Carefully roll up, folding the sides over about halfway, then roll to the end.

4. Place the strudel on the prepared baking tray, seam-side-down. Brush with melted butter and bake for 40 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown.

Step 5

5. Sprinkle with icing sugar and serve with cream or ice-cream.
