Baharat is a spice mix used throughout the Arab world to season everything from lentils to meat. There are many variations; this recipe is from my grandmother. It is best to buy all the spices whole and grind them yourself for extra flavor.

Baharat

paprika

black pepper

cumin

coriander

cinnamon

cloves

cardamom

star anise

nutmeg

Combine paprika, pepper, cumin, coriander, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, star anise, and nutmeg in a bowl and mix well. Store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.


This "Baharat" was better than the Lebanese Baharat we buy at the Middle Eastern Market. Thank you Ayda for sharing your recipe.

First time having this spice blend and easy to make and follow. Put it on some chicken liberally and crusted the chicken in a pan with it and added it into a salad with some falafel and tzatziki sauce. This spice is deffo a pantry staple now. THANK YOU for posting this

I used this recipe for a Greek recipe which called for it. It made a lot, but it smelled nice and complimented the Greek recipe well. Would recommend and will make it again.

A combination of flavors I’d never tried before. I used it to make baharat salmon cakes and was more than pleased with the result! I’ll be trying more recipes of this kind.

This is a great recipe. It’s just that it makes a ton! I mean a ton! It only takes a little pinch of this spice. So you more than likely will never use it all. Unless you are a restaurant. So it is a waste of spices. But again, I’m thankful for the recipe as I have not been able to find it anywhere.
