For years, I've used this smooth white sauce for pasta to make many dishes. The recipe can easily be doubled or tripled. —Lois Gelzer, Standish, Maine

Exactly what the name says, a basic white sauce. It’s a perfect base for anything you want to make. I like to add chicken or dried beef to it and serve it over toast. I do add an extra 1/2 cup of milk to it to thin it out. I also add extra black pepper to add to the flavor. The easy to follow directions make it great for someone who is just learning to cook.

AMAZING! Tastes wonderful, used it to make my first ever dinner! (Dont judge im 14??)  added a chunk of mozzarella and a sprinkle (okay way more than that i love that stuff) of crunched up mint. Totally recommend it

Great tasting recipe and easy to make!  It tastes great on vegetables or poultry.  I got a lot of requests for this recipe when I made it on Thanksgiving.

Started with a hot pan, a teaspoon of minced garlic from a jar with the butter. It melted fast and sizzled while I stirred. Had to substitute black pepper for white; that was ok; didn't measure salt as I only had a course pink sea salt grinder; that was o; also added a tiny tiny pinch of rubbed sage. No whisk avail, used a plastic fork, no problem stirring in the flour, which I had to measure with large dinner spoons, that was ok. Only had lactose free 1% milk. The result was GREAT. This recipe is very forgiving. Stirred in my freshly cooked pasta as soon as it was done and the sauce was the perfect thickness. Next time, I would double the recipe as it only coated half the pasta I cooked.

I loved it    To make it sweeter you can add some cheese

I made this white sauce for a potato-ham scallop I just took out of the oven. I doubled the recipe and it came out smooth and creamy and the scalloped potatoes and ham tasted wonderful.

The best basic sauce recipe. You can do anything with it, I love to add curry and abit of cheese and serve it over veggies! It generally needs abit more salt, though.

Yummm. I had leftover pasta (bow tie style),  a piece of rotisserie chicken. Threw in some frozen peas/carrots. Very good. Thank you.  I did have to add about 1/4 cop milk as was thick but have a feeling my tablespoon was heaped

I used this recipe as a base for a cheese sauce I needed for a baked Brussels Sprouts dish.  I doubled the recipe and added some Parmesan and Gruyere cheese.  The cheese sauce, when done, was smooth and creamy..... perfect for the casserole I wanted to make.  #TOHCommunityCooks

Had to add an ungodly amount of flour ?? it was as thick as water.

I loved the resepi. and my parents loved it to. the only changes i made was I doubled it.

Just finished making this, looks and tastes great! Serving with fresh steamed asparagus, and cod fillets.

You can make some really great sauces using this recipe as the base ??  If it's very thin initially then turn up the heat and keep stirring, it will thicken up very nicely.

Very easy and good. Can definitely add your own seasonings, this is a great base!

have made this many times.  I add onions and pour it over par boiled thickly sliced boiled potatoes, top with bread crumbs & cheese and bake until browned for a wonderful potato side dish.

Love this because its the prefect most simple base then once you have this you can add whatever seasonings, cheeses, ect. To flavor it to whatever youre cooking.
