Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Season the chicken thighs generously with salt and pepper. Combine the garlic powder, paprika and cumin in a small bowl.
Sprinkle the seasoning mixture on the tops of the chicken thighs and then place on an aluminum foil lined baking sheet. *(you might not need all of the spice rub) Spray the tops of the chicken thighs with olive oil cooking spray.
Bake for 20 minutes, remove from the oven and baste generously with barbecue sauce. Place back into the oven for 10 minutes and then remove the chicken to a platter and tent with foil for 5 minutes to rest.
Slice the chicken thighs into strips and serve.
Preheat the grill to a medium high heat, about 375-400 degrees. Season the chicken generously with salt and pepper and then rub the seasoning mixture on the tops of the chicken thighs.
Place the chicken thighs on the grill, top side down and cook for 5 minutes. Turn the thighs over and cook for another 5 minutes. Baste the chicken thighs generously with barbecue sauce, close the lid and cook another 3-4 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce is set.
Remove the chicken from the grill and place on a large plate or platter. Tent with aluminum foil and let the chicken thighs rest for 5 minutes.
Slice the chicken and serve.
