The macaroni should be cooked until they are al dente i.e. cooked to be firm to the bite and should not be mushy or sticky. Sliced capsicum can be replaced with capsicum cubes. If you wish, you can boil sweet corn on a stove top in a deep bowl, instead of cooking in a microwave. Sweet corn and green peas should be boiled till tender to use in this salad. They should not turn mushy. You can use coloured capsicum to make it more attractive and colourful.

Many markets sell a wide range of macaroni products. In addition to being available in a plain form, macaroni pasta is sometimes flavored with various ingredients for special uses. It can also be made from rice flour, spelt flour, or other types of grain flours, for people who want to experiment with some pasta variations. If possible, try to obtain macaroni made with Durum wheat, since the pasta will hold up better through the cooking process. Choose a well branded and confirm on the manufacturing as well as the expiry date.

Processed cheese is sometimes sold in blocks, and quite often sold packed in individual cubes, sometimes with plastic wrappers or wax paper separating them. Processed cheese should not be too crumbly or dry with the colour being relatively uniform. Check the expiry date and look out for any discoloration or moldy spots.

Step 7

To boil macaroni, in a deep non-stick pan, add enough water to boil the macaroni in and add 1 tsp oil to it. Now add the salt. We add the salt at this stage as it not only helps the water come to a boil faster but also gives flavor to the macaroni. Let the water come to a rapid boil. Once it starts boiling, add 1 cup of macaroni to it. Cook on a medium flame for 10-12 minutes, while stirring occasionally. The macaroni should be cooked until they are al dente i.e. cooked to be firm to the bite and should not be mushy or sticky. Drain well and throw the water away. Refresh the macaroni under cold water. This ensures that they stop cooking. Keep boiled macaroni aside. If you are not going to use it immediately, then add 1 tsp of oil and toss it well. This will help to prevent the macaroni from sticking to each other.

To boil corn, place approx. 1/2 cup of sweet corn kernels (makai ke dane) in a deep bowl. Pour enough water. Microwave on high for 7 minutes until the kernels are soft and tender. Drain using a strainer. This is boiled sweet corn. Keep aside.

Step 9

Take 1/4 cup of green peas. Put the green peas in a pan with enough water. Boil them in enough water in a deep pan. Strain the water using a strainer and discard the water.
