Step 1

Preheat the oven to 375 F.

Step 2

Butter the baking dish generously and pour in the berries, lemon juice and cinnamon. Toss to combine and set aside.

Step 3

In a separate bowl, combine 3/4 cup sugar, flour, baking powder and 1/4 teaspoon of salt and mix well.

Step 4

Add melted butter and milk to the dry mixture and stir to combine.

Step 5

Pour the batter evenly over the berries in the baking dish, making sure to cover all the fruit and get all the way to the edges.

Step 6

In a small bowl, combine the remaining 1/2 cup sugar, cornstarch and a pinch of salt until well-combined.

Step 7

Sprinkle this evenly over the batter, making sure to coat everything.

Step 8

Slowly and gently pour the boiling water over the top of everything, trying not to disrupt the sugar mixture on top too much.

Step 9

Bake for 1 hour or until the top is deeply golden and crunchy.

Step 10

Serve warm with whipped cream or ice cream on top.
