Step 1
Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray a 9x13 baking pan and set aside.
Step 2
In large bowl, beat butter and sugar with electric mixer or a stand mixer with a paddle attachment, on medium speed until light and fluffy.
Step 3
Beat in the eggs, one at a time, until fully incorporated.
Step 4
Stir in the vanilla.
Step 5
Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Mix into the butter mixture until just combined.
Step 6
Stir in the apples and walnuts. Spoon into the prepared pan, tapping the bottom of the pan on the counter to release any air bubbles.
Step 7
Bake 35 to 45 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean.
Step 8
Remove the oven and place on a baking rack to cool.
Step 9
Prepare the brown sugar icing glaze (see notes) then swirl over the top of the cake. Slice once the icing has set.
Step 10
Keep stored at room temperature in a closed container for up to 5 days.
