Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease a round 9-inch baking dish.

Step 2

For the topping: In a small bowl, sift together the 3/4 cup brown sugar and cornstarch, then set aside.

Step 3

In a large bowl, combine flour, ⅓ cup brown sugar, and baking powder. Mix until evenly combined.

Step 4

Stir in butter, egg, milk, and corn syrup until just combined.

Step 5

Transfer batter to the prepared baking dish and sprinkle the brown sugar and cornstarch mixture evenly over the top.

Step 6

Boil water, then carefully pour the water onto the back of a large spoon and let it run off onto the top of the cake. Drizzle water evenly over the whole surface of the cake.

Step 7

Bake cake for 40-45 minutes or until an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

Step 8

Scoop to serve and drizzle the sauce in the bottom of the dish over top. Great served with vanilla ice cream!
