Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 F.

Step 2

Ensure apples are washed, peeled, cored and cut into bite sized pieces and put into a large mixing bowl.

Step 3

Place 10 inch cast iron skillet over medium low heat and melt the butter for the filling.

Step 4

Once the butter is melted, whisk in brown sugar, cinnamon and salt.

Step 5

Pour the butter mixture into the mixing bowl containing the apples and toss until apples are coated.

Step 6

Add the apples and butter back into the skillet and turn the heat up to medium. Continuously stir while it cooks for 5 minutes, until apples begin to soften. Remove the pan from the heat, but keep the apple mixture in it.

Step 7

After the apples are partially cooked, cut the 5 tablespoons of butter into 5 separate pieces.

Step 8

Except the ground cinnamon, mix all topping ingredients together in a medium mixing bowl. It is easiest to combine with a pastry cutter or hands. It is okay to have small lumps of butter throughout the mixture.

Step 9

Top the apples in the skillet with the topping evenly and place in the oven. Sprinkle cinnamon on top.

Step 10

Bake for 35-40 minutes, until apples are tender and topping is crunchy.
