Step 1
Peel and slice apples into a medium bowl. Add zest and lemon juice and mix frequently to keep apples from browning. Sprinkle with a little cinnamon if you're a cinnamon junkie like me!

Arrange apple slices in a cast iron skillet or a porcelain baking dish. When choosing a vessel to bake this dessert, think shallow and wide!

Mix dry ingredients together.
Step 4
Add cubed cold butter and work with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

Press mixture over apples and dot with the extra 1 Tablespoon butter.
Step 6
Bake at 350 degrees for 45-50 minutes until top is slightly browned and mixture is bubbly around the edges.
Step 7
Let cool for 10-15 minutes, then serve warm with vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream!
