Step 1

In a small mixing bowl, beat egg whites, cream of tartar, and salt until soft peaks form.

Add sugar and beat until stiff peaks form.

Step 3

Gently fold in chocolate chips.

Step 4

Drop level tablespoonsful onto greased baking sheets. Sprinkle lightly with sugar, if desired.

Step 5

Bake at 300 for 20-25 minutes or until meringues are dry and crisp.

Step 6

Cool on baking sheets for two minutes, then remove to wire racks to cool completely.

Step 7

Store in an airtight container.
