We've been making these since we were kids.  I think we started making them in Home Economics class in junior high.  My recipe doesn’t call for any shortening, and it's certainly not needed.

So quick and easy and really tasty.  I will definitely be keeping this recipe in mind for hot summer days when I don't want to turn the oven on.  I do think I overcooked my syrup mixture a bit as the bars were harder than I would have liked.  I will be more careful next time.

Scotcheroos are one of my all time favorites.  They remind me of my grandma!  I also do not add the shortening.  Just sprinkle the chips over the hot bars, wait for them to start to melt, and spread with a knife! :)

This is an excellent recipe and a favorite of many.  It's been mentioned before, but don't overcook that syrup; it's really the only part of this you can mess up.  Also, don't wait too long to stir in the cereal or spread it out in your pan.  Work quickly and it's easy.

I make these all the time, just without the shortening. They are SO GOOD. They always go fast at my house. Be sure not to boil the syrup mixture to long, or your bars will be hard!

I can not stop eating these. I love them. Sometimes I put them in a 10x13 pan so they aren't quite so thick and I use 6 oz. each of the chips. I agree, the shortening is unnecessary. My brother is a marine and these travel great and are very well accepted!!
