When we were kids, my sister and I would prepare the freshly picked lettuce for this wilted lettuce salad recipe, rinsing it several times and carefully drying it. As we did so, we quibbled about the portions we'd each have. Somehow, it seems she always managed to get more! We still can't get enough of this salad. —Doris Natvig, Jesup, Iowa

Classic Wilted Lettuce Salad

bacon strips, cut up

white vinegar

water

green onions, sliced

sugar

salt

pepper

lettuce

hard-boiled large egg, chopped

In a large skillet, cook bacon over medium heat until crisp. Using a slotted spoon, remove to paper towels to drain.

To the hot drippings, add the vinegar, water, onions, sugar, salt and pepper, stirring until sugar is dissolved.

Place lettuce in a salad bowl; immediately pour dressing over and toss lightly. Top with egg and bacon. Serve immediately.

My Grandma made this salad when I spent part of my summer breaks with her. I learned from her to let the hot bacon drippings COOL before adding the vinegar and water because it tends to splatter. Then slowly reheat it right before serving. Also, she sprinkled the sugar directly on the lettuce before adding the dressing. I skipped that ate a time or two and the dressing got funky  and caramelized when the sugar was added to the hot drippings. 

From time to time, I’ve made the dressing and used it on a regular garden salad. Still good, especially when those fresh garden tomatoes are added. Kind of like a BLT salad.

<p>I really wanted to love this but the dressing was beyond bland and I followed the directions -I did omit the water.  Barely a hint of the vinegar and bit of sweet from the sugar.  The ratio's seem off in terms of vinegar/sugar.  I can't imagine how it would have tasted if I had added the water too.    Going back to my old Amish recipe.   2 Tablespoons bacon grease, 2 Tablespoons white vinegar and 1 T sugar ratio.  </p>

Very easy & delicious recipe!  I added an additional hard boiled egg as we like them.

Very good for a summer or hot day. Last a while ,for one person. My grandmother has made this for me when I was a kid.

Delicious! I used lettuce and green onions from my garden. The dressing is delicious!

And what are we supposed to do with the bacon? Logically, I can figure it out, but you didn't include it in your instructions.

Grew up eating very similar but you forgot to throw in some slice and fried new potatoes.
