Ingredients: ½ cup heavy cream; ¼ cup powdered sugar; 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa; ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract; 1 ½ cups vanilla gelato; 2 tablespoons (1 oz.) prepared espresso; 2 tablespoons (1 oz.) coffee liqueur (such as Kahlúa)

This decadent dessert is ridiculously easy to make and is based around 4 of our absolute favorite things: caffeine, booze, ice cream, and chocolate. An adffogato is a traditional coffee-flavored dessert that typically looks like a scoop of creamy gelato topped off with a pour of hot espresso. A shot of liqueur is sometimes added as well to kick things up a notch (as we do in the recipe below). We opted for coffee liqueur here, but feel free to substitute in almond liqueur or leave the booze out if you prefer. Intensely rich, a small serving of adffogato is enough to satisfy. A perfect after-dinner treat for two, this grown-up sundae is sure to become a new favorite. If you find yourself with leftover chocolate whipped cream—or “accidentally” double the whipped cream to guarantee you’ll find yourself with leftovers—use it to top anything from morning waffles and French toast to shortcakes and pie. 

Coffee Liqueur Affogato with Chocolate Whipped Cream

heavy cream

sugar

cocoa

vanilla extract

vanilla gelato

(1 oz.) prepared espresso

(1 oz.) coffee liqueur (such as Kahlúa)

Combine cream, powdered sugar, cocoa, and vanilla in a bowl. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed until stiff peaks form, 7 to 8 minutes.


Divide gelato between 2 small dessert cups. Drizzle evenly with espresso and coffee liqueur. Top evenly with chocolate whipped cream.


Here's a world-class take on the ice cream float. To make this classic Italian dessert, take a scoop of vanilla gelato, drizzle with coffee liqueur and espresso, and finish with home-made chocolate whipped cream. Affogato? More like Un-ffogato-ble!
