Cowboy Calico Beans

beef

sweet onion, chopped

brown sugar

ketchup

cider vinegar

yellow mustard

(16 ounces) butter beans, drained

(16 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained

(15 ounces) pork and beans

(15-1/4 ounces) lima beans, rinsed and drained

5/25/2021: I prepared this recipe and I did add 14.5-oz. Italian-style diced tomatoes, 1 can (14.3-oz.) undiluted tomato soup and 2 Tbsp. Dijon-style mustard. I did keep the beans as the type called for, but measurements in the can weights differed. I used my range, simmering on the stovetop for 1 hour; stirring as needed. This bean dish is delicious!

i make this all the time now, my only changes are i use ground turkey instead of beef, and if i use pork and beans i leave out the brown sugar,   if i use pinto beans instead of  the pork and beans then i use half of the brown sugar called for.  So goooooooood

My family has made this recipe for years! It is requested for family gatherings from year to year. It freezes well if needed to make ahead. You can also add or delete flavors to your taste or availability in the cupboard. I usually add bacon if I have it but it’s a great recipe without it!

Good, but too sweet. I would change the amounts of ketchup & brown sugar around. Would be good on rice. 2.5 stars

Great basic recipe, the best I've found. I added about twice the vinegar, since I like the tang, a couple teaspoons of smoked paprika and a good pinch of crushed red pepper. And, of course, BACON!

I love this recipe.  I especially like you can use any kind of beans you have on hand but you do need the pork and beans.  Yummo

Perfect recipe.  Cooked these last night , we all enjoyed them.  Would be great for a potluck get together.  At first , after reading one of the comments, I ommited some of the brown sugar in fear it would be to sweet. But then had to add it back into the dish.   This recipe has a perfect balance with the acidity and sweet. Just try it exactly as it is.

Wow! I normally don’t like bean things. I do eat Lima beans, sometimes Red beans in chili, but not a fan of all the others used in this recipe. But I made it  following the recipe and it is great! More like a chili type meal and not a soup type. I loved eating mine with tortilla chips!

I make this same recipe but add a pound of bacon.  I could eat it every day. I make it quite often and give recipe out as often.  It’s YUMMY!

I made this but used 1/2lb of cooked bacon and a can of Bush Honey Maple beans. Unbelievable dish!

I have made these for several years to bring to our Christmas potluck. The dish always comes back empty, so I always put a bit aside so I have some for later at home. Almost a meal in itself. Someone asked years ago the difference between lima beans - green in color - and butter beans - yellow in color. They are totally different in flavor. My recipe doesn't call for lima beans. Mine also calls for a tablespoon of molasses and bacon. Everything tastes better with bacon.

Delicious! When I took them to a family function...my brother wouldn’t stop eating them!

I really liked this recipe.  Next time I will cut the sugar in half.  It was a little sweet for me, but very good!

The flavor of the dish was a bit bland-  could be spicier or a stronger barbecue flavor. The beans tended to "mush" together with stirring after the 4-5 hours of slow cooking. But, very easy and convenient to make.

My Aunt Henrietta used to make these for all our birthdays.  I do put in 3 cans of pork

This is a nice, easy recipe. I love that is is made in the slow cooker. Since it makes a good amount, it's a nice dish to make for a get-together and can be served right out of the slow cooker. It's not the most attractive dish, but it tastes really good!
