This homemade Cream of Chicken Soup Substitute only takes 10 minutes to make and is the best creamy and flavorful substitute for a 10.75 oz can.

Cream of Chicken Soup Substitute

milk (, cold)

cornstarch

Tablespoons butter

chicken bouillon paste (,

salt

⅛ black pepper

onion powder

garlic powder

parsley flakes

In a small saucepan whisk together milk and cornstarch. Add butter, bouillon, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder and parsley.

Bring to a boil, stirring frequently. Once boiling, simmer for 30 more seconds to thicken.

Use in recipes to replace one (10.75 oz) can of cream of (anything) soup.

What a great recipe and so very easy!  This recipe is a real gift for those of us who can't do gluten or MSG which is in all of those cream soups in the stores. I used it in the Loaded Chicken Enchiladas recipe on this site, which also turned out fantastic. I'll use this recipe forever now for so many dishes that take soup.  So very thrilled that I discovered this site!!

Tripled recipe, added shredded rotisserie chicken, carrots, celery, broccoli and a diced potato.  A great meal.

Thank you so much for posting this recipe.  Campbell's Soup company has stopped delivering it's Healthy Request line of soups to many grocery stores here in California and on-line at Amazon.com.  The Healthy Request line has low sodium, but I bought it for over 15 years because it has no added MSG to which I am highly allergic and can be hospitalized because of it being added to several processed/prepared foods.  They have a new line called Healthy Heart - and this product has added MSG in it.  I can not express my gratitude for finding your site and recipes.  I made the Cream of Chicken soup and OMG - fantastic.  I also plan on making the Cream of Mushroom soup per your instructions.  Thank you so much for posting this recipe.  MSG intolerance is NOT in our heads - but in our stomachs.

A little better than canned and less salt. I can make a half recipe so no leftovers.

I doubled this recipe because your chicken + rice recipe called for 2 cans. For our personal taste I found it a bit salty, however, because I was making it ahead now I know, and can adjust any additional salt called for in the finished dish, or leave it out all together. Next time I'll definitely halve the salt or even omit it since the bouillon is salty already. 5 stars anyways for ease of prep and convenience!  : )

I'm planning on trying out making this into a dry mix (dehydrated butter and possibly milk) and giving that a go to see how it tastes.

What are your thoughts on substituting butter powder? I'm hoping to make this in bulk with instructions to add milk when ready to prepare. I'd really love to hear your thoughts. Thank you in advance.

My husband is dairy free. I made this soup with coconut milk. Then, I didn't have any bouillon cubes or paste so I used 1 cup of low sodium chicken broth. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! It came out beautifully! I'm so happy to have a dairy free cream of any kind of soup now. :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Thanks a million. This recipe was a good find since countless times I exited out of a recipe due to seeing "cream of [x] soup" in the ingredients list. While I understand about cost and everything, I still want to maintain a level of quality and stay moderately healthy. 

At some point, I realised that I should swallow the pride for once. I still figured that you could make something akin to it with basic ingredients, and lo and behold! Something here that would tick the needed boxes: quick, easy, cheap, basic ingredients, plus I know what I am putting in my body.
