Step 1
To prepare pastry, in a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, salt and shortening and mix to form a stiff dough.

Place egg yolk in a measuring cup; add enough milk to equal 2/3 cup and blend. Stir into pastry mixture. Divide dough in half; roll out one piece into a rectangle to fit a cookie sheet or jelly roll pan. Sprinkle dough with corn flakes.
Step 3
Core and peel apples, and then slice them. Place the apples on top of the corn flakes.

In a small bowl, mix sugar, cinnamon and flour; sprinkle over apples.

Roll out remaining pastry and place over apples; pinch edges together. Beat egg white until stiff; spread over top crust.
Step 6
Bake at 375° F for 1 hour.
Step 7
To prepare glaze, in a small bowl, combine milk and powdered sugar and blend until smooth, thin glaze forms. Drizzle glaze over top of apple bars while still warm. Enjoy!
