Step 1
Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease a 9x13-inch metal cake pan with non-stick spray and set aside.
Step 2
In a large mixing bowl, with an electric mixer beat dry cake mix, pie filling, and eggs on low speed for 2 minutes. The batter will be thick with apple chunks.
Step 3
Spread half of the cake batter in the prepared pan.
Step 4
Mix cinnamon and sugar and sprinkle over the batter in the pan. Spread the remaining batter over top. *see notes

Place the cake on the center rack in the preheated oven. Bake for 32-40 minutes until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before frosting.
Step 6
FOR FROSTING (see notes): In a large bowl with an electric mixer cream butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla on medium-high until fluffy (2-3 minutes).
Step 7
Mixing on low-speed slowly add powdered sugar until combined (about 30-60 seconds). Add 1 teaspoon of heavy cream at a time until you reach your desired consistency.
Step 8
Frost the cooled cake and garnish with ground cinnamon or apple pie spice mix sprinkled on top of the frosting.
