German Chocolate Dump Cake

coconut

devil's food cake mix (regular size)

cream cheese, softened

butter, melted

vanilla extract

confectioners' sugar

chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 13x9-in. baking pan.

Sprinkle coconut and 1 cup pecans into baking pan. Prepare cake mix according to package directions. Pour batter into prepared pan.

In a large bowl, beat cream cheese, butter and vanilla until smooth; beat in confectioners' sugar. Stir in chocolate chips and remaining 1/2 cup pecans. Spoon over batter. Cut through batter with a knife to swirl. Bake until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, 35-40 minutes. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack.

I made the cake exactly as instructed and it was really good.  I made it a second time with a couple of changes.  If you were a child of the 80's and liked the chocolate coconut bundt cake, you should try this:  1. Do not spread the coconut and pecans into the pan.  Instead  Mix the cake mix as directed but add the pecans to the cake mix and spread into the greased pan.  2.  Mix into the cream cheese mixture the coconut and drop on the cake as directed.  Follow all of the instructions except for these 2 changes.  This cake made me and my sister smile ear to ear.  It tasted just like the chocolate coconut bundt cake our mom used to make in the 80's.  Thanks for the delicious trip down memory lane.

To those who said the cream cheese stayed on top............   You MUST cut through & swirl the topping,  Try it again,  it's is worth it!!    I know it as Earthquake  Cake & that is what it looks like :+))

Sorry but this recipe should be renamed.  It is not a Dump Cake.  BUT.....It is very much worth the extra effort.

So very good and so very easy.  I love the German chocolate cake taste without all the effort.  I did store the cake in the refrigerator until we had finished it and it seemed to be even better cold.  I will definitely be making this again.

This is really good.  Made this for Valentine's Day and used German chocolate cake mix instead of the Devil's food mix.  It's good either way, just a matter of preference.

I have the same recipe but it is called Earthquake Cake. All the areas you place the cream cheese mixture will look like craters in the cake area. The cake will look like a mess. Very tasty.

The cake was great! Nice and moist.  Because so many said it was an ugly cake I poured only 2/3 of batter, layered the filling, then layer top with rest of chocolate. Came out nice and smooth across the top.  Probably my oven, but I had to bake 12 minutes longer than recommended.  I will make this again.

This cake was soooo good. It’s kind of addicting! It’s not too sweet and very moist. It was a huge hit in my household. I’m usually not a German chocolate cake fan but THIS was very good. Will make again and again. I did have to cook a bit longer bc I felt the middle needed to be cooked longer but other than that, I followed the recipe as written.

Neighbors on our cul-de-sac loved this cake and so did I.  Had a little left which was perfect later from freezer.  Mine looked like the picture but was a slightly darker cake mix.  Great flavor and textures, and not too sweet.  Will definitely make again.

I made this cake and it came out beautifully!  The only change in preparing the batter was that I'd used buttermilk in place of the water called for on the package of cake mix.  Everything else was what the recipe called for!  delowenstein, TOH Volunteer Field Editor

Amazing!!!  Made this for a family reunion.  It was so moist and rich.  fyi, the batter in the middle will have some jiggle but should firm up once removed from the oven and cooled.

I just made this this afternoon. It came out looking nothing like the picture on this site. Like another person, my cream cheese mix stayed on the top.  The cream cheese mix was jiggly but firmed up after it cooled.  It’s the ugliest dessert (my kids also mentioned that it looks gross) so you’d probably want to avoid bringing this to potlucks. But it tastes really good! Once it cools and everything settles, it resembles a 3-D topography map, it looks like snow on mountains! Tastes delicious with a scoop of ice cream.    Due to my kids’ food allergies, I used a gluten free devil’s food cake mix, and substituted the pecans with a mix of pepitas and sunflower seeds. I also used less sugar (1.5 cups instead of 2) and it still tastes really sweet. I’ll try 1 cup of sugar next time.

I just took this out of the oven, haven't tried yet but it doesn't look right :( The cream cheese stayed pretty much on top  even tho I swirled it & it's very browned, what did I do wrong? Thanks

I also have this recipe in my most frequently used cake recipes. I know it as earthquake cake as well. It uses box of German Chocolate cake mix instead of devils food. Swirling the cream cheese batter with knife might help resolve the jiggle. I cut back oven temp by about 10° once it starts browning in order to get the cream cheese batter more set before I get it out of oven

I made this for our annual Oktoberfest party.   I did bake it longer because of the middle jiggle, about 15 min. more all in all.  A very moist cake.  Easy to make, it's a keeper!  Delicious cake.

I k now this cake as Earthquake cake.   Love it!!
