Grandma Brubaker's Orange Cookies

shortening

sugar

eggs, separated, room temperature

buttermilk

all-purpose flour

baking powder

baking soda

salt

Juice and grated zest of 2 medium navel oranges

ICING:

confectioners' sugar

orange juice

butter

orange zest

The batter smelled like spoiled milk, but once baked, the cookies smelled and tasted delicious!  They are soft and so good!

I made these cookies to share with some new colleagues and they all raved about them. It was nice to have something besides chocolate. I had to bake these at 350 degrees for 13 minutes to get them done. At 325, they weren't quite done after 15 minutes.

This was an Indiana State Fair grand prize winner years ago and was published in the paper.  It's been a family favorite for years.

<p>This is the same recipe as old family recipe we have and love except this makes more cookies.  Bright orange flavor, soft, moist.  Wonderful cookie.  For the lady asking about the temperature, our recipe says to bake at 350 for 12 minutes or until light brown.</p>

4.5 stars.  I didn't have any, but my husband seemed to enjoy them.  I made 1/2 a recipe which yielded approx. 40 cookies.  However, the next time I will make the whole frosting recipe as there wasn't enough to cover all of the cookies.  And the cookies it did cover the frosting was thin, more like a glaze.  I would also use more orange zest in the cookies and the frosting too.

Delicious. I ALWAYS use real butter in baking!!  Also, although this is a perfect recipe without them, I added white vanilla baking chips to the mix.

There is such a good orange flavor in both the cookie and the icing. I didn't have any oranges so I substituted orange juice in the batter. I was glad I did have some grated orange peel in the freezer for the icing. These are delicious cookies!

These came out great.  Thanks to the reviewer who suggested white chocolate chips.  I will put which chocolate chips in anything I can!  Scones, Bread Pudding, Raspberry/White chocolate chip pancakes.  ONLY use real butter and I never measure frosting ingredients.  Just keep making.  Also add melted butter to frosting ingredients.  Sprinkled a bit of sanding sugar on top.

Halved recipe for 3 dozen cookies. DELICIOUS with the fresh OJ & orange peel. Just added a bit more powdered sugar, and a few Tbsp's of milk to firm up frosting a bit. Kept in fridge and I THINK next day they were even better!!THANK YOU this is a keeper!

Made them for  my friends and they loved them. I followed the recipe exactly as said, wonderful. I loved the orange taste of the frosting and the cookie.

Baked these for the first time last year; now it's one of my favorites. The orange flavoring is not overpowering and that's what I love about it.  A delicious soft cookie! Thank you Grandma Brubaker wherever you are!

This has been a tried and true recipe in our family for at least three generations.  Love the mild orange flavor and the softness of the cookies.  The recipe does make a lot of cookies and I omit the orange zest, mainly because I never have it in the pantry and the kids prefer it without.

I halved the recipe, used real butter in both the cookie and icing, and didn't bother separating the egg, and the cookies turned out wonderfully. Thanks for sharing this tasty recipe!

Terrible! I'm so glad I noticed this recipe was for 60 cookies before I got too far!  These cookies turned out bland, the icing proportions were way off and there wasn't enough to cover the cookies. The amount of liquid to powder sugar was off too. Too much work with very little reward.

Yummy!!  Easy to make and the hubby loved them!!!

I omitted the orange rind because we like a milder flavor and it was very good!

Loved them.  Easy to prepare.  I added chopped walnuts to one batch & dried cranberries to another batch.  Both were equally good.  Will make them again.

Family absolutely loved these.  The orange flavor is very similar to our family favorite pizzelle recipe, which is made with lemon and orange flavors rather than anise.  I think my icing turned out a bit too runny in retrospect.  Next time I may adjust accordingly.

Great tasting, but is 325* correct temp?Baked according time then added two minutes, still limp and soft. Will try again at 375*  as most cookies are baked.
