Proof yeast with sugar in 100 degree water. Add dry milk, salt, shortening, egg and about four cups flour. Knead. If kneading by hand, keep adding flour until dough is pliable. If by mixer, use dough hook and add flour until dough pulls away cleanly from bowl. Knead until a gofl ball size piece can be stretched without breaking. Place in greased bowl and let rise until doubled. Punch down and place on floured cutting board and with hands form into a log. Divide in half and then divide each half into eight equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball with the palm of your hands and flatten into a three inch diameter circle. Place on greased baking sheet, cover lightly and let rise until doubled. Place in 400 degree oven and bake until lightly browned on top and bottom.
