Hearty Split Pea Soup

(16 ounces) dried split peas

water

potatoes,

onions,

carrots,

beef

celery

chicken bouillon granules

marjoram

poultry seasoning

sage

pepper

basil

salt, optional

First time making split pea soup. It was very flavorful and and simple to let simmer on the stove. Had to substitute thyme for the sage because I was out and left out the salt.

This is my go to split pea soup recipe. It never disappoints and I love that you can just throw all the ingredients in a pot.

I cut this recipe in half for the two of us, and we each had a large bowl, and leftovers for another meal or two. I sauteed the veggies as I love the caramelized flavor, put the other ingredients in my dutch oven, and simmered it a couple of hours. I added a tablespoon of instant mashed potato flakes and it turned out thick and delicious.

This soup is really good. I had some leftover ham including a ham bone and decided to check out this recipe. I made my own own ham bone broth and omitted the bullion and water. I didn’t use poultry.  I used leftover ham for the 2 cups of meat. I did use turnips instead of potato because that’s what I had. I puréed half the soup in the blender because I’m used to a creamy split pea.  This soup was very tasty.   Ham bone broth- 64 oz chicken stock, 4 cups water, meaty ham bone, 2 bay leaves, 1 tsp thyme, 2 bay leaves, 2 tablespoons chopped celery leaves, 2 chopped garlic, simmer for an hour or more).

Delicious! I used a pre-baked ham and added a tablespoon of bacon fat. Also, I sauteed my onions, half white and half red,  before adding them to the soup. I chopped up fresh Basil. The soup had a very slight naturally sweet taste. The spices really enhanced the peas.

this was very good. must admit to not using a couple of spices (basil&marjoram). tasting the flavor along the way didn't think they were needed, somehow basil just didn't sound right to my taste buds, not saying it's wrong just didn't need to use.we are such fans of split pea soup.

I have to add to my previous review...for my small family of three this was a large batch of soup. My daughter really does love split pea soup and so when we got home from church the next day she asked me "do we have any green soup left?" I said "Yes!!!" I heated it up for us and dang it if it wasn't a 100 times better the next day!!! It was soooo good we all had two large bowls, skipping the homemade bread all together, and we licked our lips to the very last drop! That's how good this soup is! And now I am making my second batch in a week, deliberately cooking it at bedtime so that tomorrow we can repeat our "leftover green soup" experience!!!

I was pleasantly surprised at how well this recipe turned out. I am by no means a fan of pea soup, but I was wanting something low calorie and different for dinner.This turned out to be a real winner! The peas/veggies absorbed most of the herbs, and what was left was a scrumptious tasty soup.My only recommendation is to use a large stock pot. I originally tried to make this soup with a 5 quart dutch oven, but it was way too small. IAgain, this recipe is a keeper!

Wow, this was awesome!  Easy and delicious.  Was concerned about 2 large onions but I think that was the trick for the great taste.  I never liked split Pea soup until now!

It was awesome.    My son drop by for unexpected visit and he loved it as well.    Is the nutritional info correct?    Says no fiber in this recipe.

This is one of my favorite soup recipes.  The flavor is awesome.  I also like to throw a ham bone in there too for added flavor.  If you think you don't like pea soup, you should try this recipe.  Can't imagine anyone not liking it.  Nothing like a bowl of this soup on a cold winter day!

Wow, very tasty, I wished I put less pepper then the recipe calls because it was too much black pepper. When you boil long time something better to put flavory spices before the end then you will able to save spices from loosing flavor during long time boiling like this recipe calls to boil over 1 hour.

My family loves this soup!! I thought I didn't care for Split Pea soup, until I had this. It is so good. @ekatiakarpova - The directions have you boil INITIALLY and then SIMMER for over a hour. I don't think the spices lose ANY flavor during cooking....it was very flavorful. I always double this as my family gobbles it up. It is a keeper and in the winter rotation. Thanks.

I've made this with cubed ham. Excellent recipe, very flavorfull and easy to make. I would add 1 more cup of water next time.

I made this tonight and it was excellent! My husband said it blew the socks off the split pea soup a friend makes with his grandfather's recipe.The only change I made was 1) no black pepper because I don't like it, 2) Swanson's chicken broth instead of the water and bullion, and 3) didn't add salt since the broth was loaded with it.I used cubed ham from Wal-Mart and julienne carrots. We both agree that this chunky version makes the soup much heartier that traditional recipes. It will be in the rotation this winter. Thanks!
