Step 1
Start by removing your tofu block from the package and draining the liquid. Wrap the tofu in clean paper towels and place something heavy on top of it to press out the excess water. A tofu press works best, but a few heavy books or cast iron skillets will do the job. Let it press for 10-15 minutes—this step is crucial for achieving the best results.
Step 2
Once pressed, place your tofu on a cutting board and cut it into 8-12 pieces. Transfer these tofu pieces to a shallow bowl or baking dish.
Step 3
Add soy sauce, liquid smoke, garlic powder, and black pepper to a small bowl and whisk. This simple marinade creates flavorful tofu that works well in many dishes. Pour the tofu marinade over the tofu slices and let it sit for 20-30 minutes.
Step 4
Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Arrange your tofu in a single layer on the parchment-lined baking sheet. Make sure the pieces don’t touch each other to ensure even cooking.
Step 5
Bake for 20 minutes, flip the tofu pieces, and bake for another 10-15 minutes. When done, the tofu should be slightly firm and golden brown. Feel free to cook longer, depending on your preference of color and texture.
Step 6
Remove from the oven and enjoy on sandwiches, grain bowls, stir-fry dishes, or as a snack with your favorite dipping sauce.
