Name: Northern Standard
Ingredients: 2 1/4 ounces Knob Creek Rye; 1 ounce Carpano Antica vermouth; 2 dashes Angostura Bitters; 1 teaspoon Tempus Fugit Fernet Angelico (or Fernet Branca); 1 teaspoon Tempus Fugit Gran Classico (or your favorite amaro); Luxardo maraschino cherries for garnish

This drink is even better a Manhattan, thanks to three different bitter elements. Created by mixologist James Ives, the Northern Standard is a full-flavored cocktail that uses Knob Creek rye aged in charred barrels to balance out the richness of Carpano. Equally strong as it is smooth.

Carpano Antica vermouth

Angostura Bitters

Tempus Fugit Fernet Angelico (or Fernet Branca)

Tempus Fugit Gran Classico (or your favorite amaro)

Luxardo maraschino cherries

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice to the wash line. Stir for 45 revolutions, adding ice as needed. Strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with one cherry skewered on a bamboo pick and serve quickly.


If you enjoy Manhattans then you have to give the Northern Standard a try. The Fernet Angelico or Fernet Branca, and the amaro of your choice add so much depth to the drink. It's smooth, strong, and so very dangerously delicious. I like vermouth so I usually add a little more than the recipe calls for, and it's currently my favorite drink through this Covid nonsense.
