One-Pot Unstuffed Cabbage

TOMATO SAUCE:

onion,

(28 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained

(8 ounces) tomato sauce

water

lemon juice

raisins

MEATBALLS:

rice

Worcestershire sauce

salt

pepper

beef

20g protein. <b>Diabetic Exchanges</b>: 2-1/2 starch

For those freaking out about the raisins - note that those are a traditional German ingredient. Omit if you don't like them. I'm German and I personally don't care for them either! But I love this soup; I've been making a variation of it for years. Instead of rice, I make dumplings. It's delish.

One of the great things about TOH recipes is that you can modify them to your taste and what you have on hand.  I omitted the lemon juice and raisins.  I also used a leftover jar of marinara sauce for the large can of diced tomatoes.  I did add a small can of fire roasted tomatoes to have that diced texture though.  It turned out amazing still!

Have not tried this yet, but definitely will. Have yet to find a TOH recipe we didn't like. I find it a shame that someone wouldn't try a recipe because it didn't fit into their nationality. I'm Polish on both sides of my family. My entire family loves to cook and try new things. We still love the traditional, but have so much fun discovering the new. Keep up the good work THO.

I'll give it 5  stars for its versatility and ease, can be done gluten free, and also...it can be personalized.  I've been making unstuffed for years because I don't enjoy rolling them.  I don't use raisins. My sauce is just 3 cans of whole tomatoes, blended in the Vitamix.  I add chopped fresh parsley, minced onion, 1 can of water, black pepper, and a teaspoon of chicken bouillon granules.  I might add a pat of butter too.  To the meat, chopped onion and parsley, COOKED rice, dash of cinnamon, shake of garlic salt, and a heaping tablespoon of brown sugar. SO GOOD.  We love it.

I don't see anything in the recipe that says where or when to add the cabbage.  Am I missing something there?

I have made a soup like this for years with one minor change so that I can make large batches and freeze it. Instead of meatballs I use loose browned beef and omit the rice. Then when I use from the freezer I add the rice for a totally deconstructed cabbage roll soup. NO raisins..lol

Yummy, great comfort food on a cold night, easy to make and low fat. This was my first try, and I didn't change a thing. I will definitely make this again, but would reduce the amount of lemon juice and probably omit he raisins and add some sugar instead like others have suggested. I imagine it would be good with pork or sausage.

I didn’t come anywhere near 36 meatballs, but this was still yummy. I thought the raisins were a weird addition, but they added a nice different flavor.

I made this today and WOW! What an excellent recipe! My father in law is German and he will love this when I bring him some tomorrow. I doubled the recipe and I also added diced potatoes to it and chopped garlic to the meatballs. After adding the cabbage I added some salt and pepper. I also only used about 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice. (not a fan of lemon juice lol) My husband totally loved this dish. He said it reminded him of his grandmother's cabbage soup. I posted and shared this recipe on Facebook, I highly recommend it! Very good recipe. My husband said as he was eating it, "you can make this again!" Thank you for sharing it Mrs. Bernard Snow! =)

I have a version of this that's even easier...forget the meatballs, just use browned ground beef and rice added individually....talk about simple. If making a large batch I leave the rice out and add it to thawed and simmering soup before serving...

Shame on the Polish lady for writing such a review.Its a joy and great to be open minded about new recipes and cuisine.  This dish sounds yummy.  Will try to make this and save recipe for making in my crock pot. I think it would make just fine to simmer on low for 6-8 hrs in slow cooker. Great different easier recipe for cabbage rolls....very easy to tweak to your personal taste too. Ty TOH.

I would definitely leave out the raisins and add a bit of sugar. I think the meatballs would hold together better if an egg or two was added. I am going to try it this weekend. I love cabbage rolls, but they are a lot of work. 5 without trying

This was a hit with my family.  Delicious just the way it is, and simple to assemble.  I wouldn't change a thing!  Will definitely make again.

great recipe love the idea of ":un-cabbage rolls" I have 5 authentic recipes for enchiladas, many more for spaghetti sauce, and two or three for each of my Eastern European recipes. Every area adapts to available ingredients so warmer pats of Eastern Europe wpuld grow grapes for wine and then have raisins for sweetening - after all sugar did not become commonly available for mass consumption untl about 100 yrs ago, in Europe.

I made this for my family, following the recipe as written. My husband and daughter weren't crazy about the raisins, but I enjoyed them. Having grown up in an ethnically mixed farming community in Pa, I have to say that recipes from the many different cultures were swapped and changed all the time. There is no such thing as a dish being from one country, as many regions within a country may prepare that dish differently.

it was ok.. maybe kind of wierd with the lemon juice. sort of tangy.. meatballs were ok...not my favorite..

Just answering hangelpoot2. It says in large pot combine sauce ingredients and the cabbage is one of the sauce ingredients

I go one step easier and I do not make the meatballs. I just combine all in a skillet in the style of a Spanish rice. I used to make traditional cabbage rolls until one day I realized my family was chopping them on their plate before eating them. My kids loved this and they called it Broken Cabbage Rolls.

I agree with ohio46 and do not make mine into meatballs. They will get cut anyway and it makes preparation easier. I did the sugar-raisin substitute because I had no raisins. I don't think it could have been better.   But I don't care...it tastes good!!

This was so good. I used half beef and half lean pork along with my favorite brown rice.   This is a keeper
