My mare is thought to have hind gut acidosis. I started her on Visceral about 5 days ago. She is on a grain free diet and gets Omneity. Should I add ODH? Or give the Visceral more time? 0 votes QMy mare is thought to have hind gut acidosis. I started her on Visceral about 5 days ago. She is ...... Read more AOptimum Digestive Health and Visceral are very similar products, with Visceral containing added ingredients to support gastric health. It can take 2-3 months to notice a significant difference with either Visceral or Optimum Digestive Health depending on the severity of the digestive problem so giving Visceral more time is recommended. Can ODH be given with Amino Trace? My boy is over weight since forever, probably IR. No laminitis, no signs of ulcers. He has a loose manure/diharea/water problem since I got him but it seems to get worse these times. Adding just probiotics alone never helped so Id like to try something else. Daily Gold clay helps when I give him some, but I am not a huge fan of giving clay to horses on a regular basis. 0 votes QCan ODH be given with Amino Trace? Ignoring rest of feed. 0 votes QHorse doesn’t like the taste . Pulling faces. Ignoring rest of feed. AHi Peter, we're sorry to hear that! Optimum Digestive Health is very concentrated and doesn’t have any sweet flavourings to entice horses that may be used to eating feeds with molasses and other sweeteners. We always suggest starting with a small dose and working your way up to the full dose, this usually helps to ease the transition. Adding a handful of a palatable grain, beet pulp, flaxseed or forage pellets (sort of like adding sprinkles) usually works best. Fenugreek, which you can find in the Indian spices section or in capsules in the natural supplement section of the grocery store, also works very well. Adding a bit of vegetable oil, molasses, apple sauce, fruit juice or peppermint oil, depending on what your horse prefers, are other strategies to make it tastier. We also have an article here on tips and tricks on introducing a new supplement to your horse that you may find helpful: https://madbarn.ca/how-to-introduce-a-new-mineral-vitamin-to-your-horse/ I have had my gelding on Visceral+ For just over three weeks and he is having very runny bowel movements. Could this be related and is it an expected effect or is this a sign of a sensitivity and should I stop feeding it? 0 votes QI have had my gelding on Visceral+ For just over three weeks and he is having very runny bowel mo...... Read more AHi Elisabeth,This is not expected with Visceral+ and is likely due to other factors. Most horses experience an improvement in runny stools when using Visceral+.Can you describe your horse's feeding program and management? Is he continuing to experience runny stools? Are there any other changes? You can email us at info@madbarn.com and I can put you in touch with a nutritionist to help troubleshoot the issue. What is the difference between Optimum Digestive Health and Visceral+? 0 votes QWhat is the difference between Optimum Digestive Health and Visceral+? AVisceral+ was primarily designed to support gastric health in horses that are suspected or at high risk of having gastric ulcers. It also contains bacterial probiotics and prebiotic ingredients like MOS (mannan-oligosaccharides) to nourish the hindgut bacteria and restore balance to the entire digestive system. Ingredients like glutamine, magnesium, and lecithin also help to support the integrity of the intestinal lining and help the GI tract heal itself naturally. Optimum Digestive Health, or ODH, is a supplement that targets hindgut health, specifically, to enhance the fermentation of forage and reduce the level of harmful bacteria that may be proliferating in the hindgut. ODH contains probiotics and prebiotics, like Visceral+, but it does not contain glutamine or lecithin. Does optimum contain any sugars and in what quantity ? 0 votes QDoes optimum contain any sugars and in what quantity ? AOptimum Digestive Health does not contain any added sugars. It uses oat bran for pelleting but this does not add an appreciable amount of sugar to the formulation. I just bought Opimum digestive health pellets. My 25 year old Halflinger is presently on oméprazole in the morning. We thought he had ulcers. In the last year he was diagnosed with cushing. He takes pergolide at around 3h00 pm. He has a protein deficiency and does not seem to absord the vitamins in his food. I'm reluctant to stop giving him the oméprazole because it keeps him eating. The vet is now saying it might be an intestinal inflammatory disease or cancer. I wanted to try Optimum to see if we can get his body to absorb the nutrients. I also bought the w-3 oil. We give him the oméprazole at 7h00 in the morning and feed him an hour later. What time should i give him the optimum? 0 votes QI just bought Opimum digestive health pellets. Read more AThe product is quite stable and resistant to temperature changes. You can soak it, but once it is wet, the bacteria and yeast will become active, so ideally you would not soak for too long, no more than 4 hours before feeding. Omneity does contain enzymes and yeast as well, but if you feel your horse needs additional support then it is fine to feed them together. The Optimum Digestive Health is much more comprehensive than just the probiotic and does contain ingredients that Omneity does not, so although there is a bit of overlap, most of what is in ODH is not in Omneity. Read more AThe difference between the two is that Optimum Digestive Health Pellets (ODH) have both probiotics and yeasts, toxin binders, enzymes and more to support total hindgut health. Our Optimum Probiotic contains our 5-strain blend of probiotics. Both are excellent for replenishing and maintaining healthy gut bacteria so that nutrients are better absorbed and the risk of digestive upset is reduced. It depends what your goal is with your horse, but for more comprehensive hindgut support, I would go with the ODH. It is also important to determine whether there are underlying issues contributing to weight loss. Teeth issues and/or ulcers may be contributing to weight loss. I would also ensure that she is getting adequate levels of vitamins and minerals from her feed by weighing it and reading the feed instructions carefully. I say this because we often find that commercial feeds are not fed at the correct rate (by weight) and can result in deficiencies long term that can affect many aspects of health, especially senior horses.
