Red, White 'n' Blue Salad

(3 ounces) berry blue gelatin

boiling water, divided

water, divided

blueberries

gelatin

heavy whipping cream

sugar

sour cream

vanilla extract

raspberry gelatin

We liked this. For anyone who’s wondering, for the white layer you can use a full packet of gelatin with the recommended 1/2 c water and then use only 1/2 the other ingredients (this gives a thinner white layer, keeping the dish sweeter overall and probably also sets quicker), and you can substitute frozen sliced strawberries  and strawberry gelatin for the red layer (the frozen fruit also helps it set quicker). You can also cool the hot gelatin mixtures with a few ice cubes (deduct the ice from your cold water amount) to get it to set quicker. On another note, give yourself plenty of time to complete it!

Came out great but for the white laye5, I think the next time I'll use vanilla yogurt instead of the sour cream next time. I dudntmind the sour cream but other family members did but it was still a big hit. You can make this for Halloween with orange and grape jello  and for Christmas with red and green jello. Great recipe.

I have made this for every Fourth of July for years.  The holiday simply would not be the same without it.  I would give this more than five stars if I could!

What a wonderful recipe!!!  My niece, Missy, made this for her 4th of July picnic and it was delicious!  I must admit that I am not a big fan of Jello, but this salad was delicious!  Fruity .... light ...... creamy.  Just delicious!  I think, for my taste, I would add a little more sugar to the white layer ..... all in all, though .....very tasty!!I'm thinking this could be used for other holidays ..... red (strawberry or raspberry), white and green (lime) for Christmas??? Purple (is there grape flavored Jello??), white and yellow (lemon or pineapple??) for Easter ....... Orange, white and purple for Halloween.... maybe add gummy worms or gummy eyeballs for Halloween??? Possibilties are endless!!

This was a particular hit with the kids but everyone liked it.  I used disposable clear cups and made individual servings.

This is a delicious salad, however if you want the layers to be as thick as the picture shows you need to double the recipe otherwise they are about 1/2 inch thick layers and does not fill the bowl as shown. It is delicious though...I have also made the mistake of using just whipping cream and not the "heavy" whipping cream and it still jelled and worked fine...I have made this recipe for christmas doing Red, White, and Red and it was still delicious...could of done Red, White and Green, however I just don't care for Lime Jello...so make it and enjoy it...many, many compliments, absolutely delicious! Also make sure your layers are very firm before doing the next layer or they will run together, time consuming but worth it the time for this salad, or dessert! Delicious!!

My family absolutely loved this!  Instead of 2 cups sour cream; I used 1 cup plain greek yogurt and 1 cup sour cream....it was still delicious.

Family favorite for many years! Sometimes I double layer amounts, allowing extra cooling time in between each. Have also switched out flavors/colors of gelatines, used different berries- every variation has been well received. 4th of July parties wouldn't be the same without it! I've been making this for years, a true family favorite! I do cut the white layer in half as my family didn't care for so much, and have subbed plain or vanilla yogurt for the sour cream. Greek yogurt works well.

I thought it was very simple, next time i will increase the red layer, and make the blue jello the quick set method as the boiling water was in my opinion too hot at first to get it to set in 1 hr. The freezer helped though. Overall great recipe

I have made this for the Fourth of July ever since the recipe came out in TOH originally.  I use a 9 x 13 glass Pyrex dish, which makes the layers very thin, but it's easier to transport and serve.  I like to use a few more berries than indicated.

Came together easily and everyone loved it.  A cut above the typical gelatin salad with the added fresh fruit.

I've been making this recipe for years. It was in a TOH cookbook my aunt gave me back in 1997.  It is always a festive hit.  Tip - Do not use fat free sour cream. I tried once and the middle layer would not set up.

I made this for a July 4th celebration and it looked just like the photo and was delicious.   I'll definately make again.

This is one of the best jello's I have made.  Even my husband liked it and he does not even like jello.  Great mix of fruit and flavor!

This was a HUGE hit at 2 parties I attended over the summer. Not a single bit of it left. I had to subsitute the raspberry for strawberry and it was fabulous all the same

Made the red layer strawberry because it’s what I had on hand. It was amazing! I plan on making the next one with cherries for my Granddaughter. It’s one of her favorite flavors.

Really enjoyed making and serving this dish. So pretty and patriotic in the trifle dish! Refreshing, fun and different. A keeper!

i made this for a picnic and i can't begin to tell you how much everybody loved it.  i'm not a very good cook, but it's very easy to make, just be sure to allow plenty of time for cooling between layers.  it tastes as fantastic as it looks!

This jello salad was both delicious and impressive! We used strawberries instead of raspberries and it turned out fabulous!

Make sure to let the raspberry jello cool a little (15-20 minutes) before spooning over cream layer.  I had a few white spots in the raspberry layer because the jello was too hot.  Still pretty and great tasting!

I was intimated to try this at first because of how pretty it looked but I'm glad I took a chance on it. Very easy to put together and very satisfying.

I make this every year for the 4th of July family picnic-wouldn't dare show up without it!  Last year, raspberries were really expensive, so I substituted strawberries and strawberry gelatin.  I've also made just the white mixture and layered it with fruit into individual parfait cups.

This recipe is always requested for the holidays. It is wonderful.  I don't eat gelatin salads except for this one. This dish is a family favorite.
