Savory Party Bread

unsliced round loaf sourdough bread (1 pound)

Monterey Jack cheese

butter, melted

green onions

poppy seeds

Preheat oven to 350°. Cut bread widthwise into 1-in. slices to within 1/2 in. of bottom of loaf. Repeat cuts in opposite direction. Cut cheese into 1/4-in. slices; cut slices into small pieces. Place cheese in cuts in bread.

In a small bowl, mix butter, green onions and poppy seeds; drizzle over bread. Wrap in foil; place on a baking sheet. Bake for 15 minutes. Unwrap; bake until cheese is melted, about 10 minutes longer.

<p>Made this using a homemade black olive bread and stuffed it with mozzarella, adding garlic and oregano to the melted butter instead of onions and poppy seeds. Used marinara sauce to dip it in, and it was like a black olive pizza bread. This will definitely be my go-to party recipe. </p>

I made this a while ago when it was posted with slightly different ingredients. Every time I make it, I change it up a bit with whatever I may have on hand and everyone loves it. Grand kids love it with Monterrey-Jack and sautéed red onions. My personal favorite is with crushed sautéed garlic and pepper Jack cheese… GREAT holiday appetizer!!

YUM!!! The flavors meld together perfectly! This is a little time consuming but well worth it! The presentation is wonderful and will be sure to impress your family/guests.

Made it as written the first time, and it disappeared beforei could get back with napkins. The second time, I added dry ranch mix and garlic powder to the butter, and used a combination of Mexican blend and extra sharp cheddar (I was out of cheeses), topping it with green onions and bacon before serving it with a side of sour cream based ranch. Think cheese fries. Once it was gone, I had guests running to the store for more ingredients to make two more that night! They went just as fast.   *This summer, rather than heating up the kitchen, we kept it wrapped in foil, and put it on our gas grill.   Another reviewer is right: an electric knife does make the cutting go much easier!

I have made this many times, using different cheeses.  Our favorite is pepper-jack with green chilies for extra kick.

This bread is phenomenal!!  I made it as a side with pasta, so I added some garlic and used mozzarella rather than Monterey jack, but I am sure that would be delicious as well.

This is so easy, that I've started just using this for every event. Office potluck? Hit! Christmas party with friends? Everyone loved it! Even if it's not an event and you just want something special with dinner - this recipe is just the ticket. (And it's so easy!)Plenty of opportunity to mix it up, too - adding bacon, using a different kind of bread or cheese, adding an extra garlic dipping sauce on the side, they're all winners!

I found this recipe in an old Taste of Home at my mother in law's house a long time ago. It was raining, I was bored, and found this while picking through old Taste of Home magazines along with about 6 other recipes (through at least 30 mags.) I made this when I got home and have been making it ever since; never did try any of the others. We are a pretty health-conscious family but everyone makes an exception for the cheesy bread! My son was out of town at a party this weekend and called me for the recipe so he could make it as his contribution to a New Year's Eve party. Everyone who has ever tasted it just raves over it. One of the best recipe shares ever!

Don’t expect any leftovers!  This bread appetizer went as quickly as I set it out!  I used some garlic powder, also.

I made it and it was very good.  But my question is the same as another one--how do you eat it.  I used sourdough bread and the crust is very thick on the bottom and was very difficult to pull apart.  Maybe I will try an Italian bread next .  Any other suggestions??

Delicious! Great aroma and presentation. I used white cheddar, Colby jack, 1 clove of garlic crushed into the butter, and omitted the onions.

I made this recently and it was gone in no time! I think I may omit the poppy seeds next time and use a blend of finely minced onion and garlic with Parmesan cheese and then serve with marinara sauce as a dip. It might be a good alternative option.

What is not to like...bread, cheese, butter...need I say more?  Makes a pretty presentation on the appetizer table and guests come back for more and more and more!

I've seen quite a few variations on this recipe over the years.  The version I made tonight was basically this one, except I couldn't find any sourdough bread and had to use Italian bread, and I forgot to buy Monterey Jack so instead used a mixture of grated provolone, grated mozzarella and grated Parmesan.  I also added a minced clove of garlic to the melted butter.   Really delicious!

Simply Awesome!  This bread was so addictive.  I added a little more butter, another cup of cheese (stuffing it both inside the slits and over the top), and left off the poppy seeds, and yet, it was still totally awesome.  It was a great Super Bowl snack to say the least.

Making it for the first time, I bought a half lb loaf of tuscan bread and followed directions exactly (cutting amounts in half, of course)exc for omitting poppy seeds - rave reviews!  Used less cheese, but put it in every cut section.  Excellent and SO easy!

I added crumbed and chopped spinach to the butter and green onions and cooked crumbled bacon really good!!

Served this for Christmas Eve party. It was a HUGE hit. People raved about how good it was. So easy. Did add 1 tsp of Jarred minced garlic....and....it was fantastic. You won't believe that you can get all the cheese in the bread ..... but you can. I used 1 lb. of 3 cheese Mexican mix. There were only 6 adults and several other appetizers. Still over half the loaf was devoured. Hubby and I heated up (uncovered in the oven at 400 for 15 min) leftovers and it was still incredibly wonderful.Thank you for this excellent recipe. It is very versatile also. You can use different breads and/or different cheeses at your whim. Enjoy!!

For picky kiddos, eliminate the poppy seeds and green onion. Instead add crushed garlic to the butter, outstanding!

This recipe was soo enjoyed that my husband has banned it!  He can't cut back and eat just a little... it's too addictive.  I only used 1/2 # of cheese and it was perfectly cheesy and delicious.

I'd forgotten about this recipe until I saw it today while searching for appetizer recipes for our family's New Year's Eve celebration!  I used to make this for a meatless Friday meal for our family of 8, & everyone loved it!  Didn't change a thing!  Some of our kids would dip it in barbeque sauce of Ranch dressing.

I made this for a starter on Christmas, it disappeared in a flash!

Yummy!  I made 1 with Mexican cheese blend and 1 with vegan cheese.  Both tasted great and I will definitely make it again.
