Step 1
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) if planning to bake the crumble in the oven after assembling it in the skillet.
Step 2
In a large cast iron skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced apples, granulated sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples are slightly softened and coated in the spices, about 8-10 minutes.
Step 3
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a pinch of salt. Add the cubed butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Step 4
Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the cooked apples in the skillet.
Step 5
Place the skillet in the preheated oven and bake for 25 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly. If your skillet is not oven-safe, you can cover the skillet with a lid or foil and let the crumble cook on the stovetop over low heat for about 20 minutes.
Step 6
Allow the crumble to cool slightly before serving. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
