The Szechuan Green Beans with Ground Pork recipe is characteristic of the hot and spicy cuisine from the Szechuan province. You can substitute lean ground chicken or turkey for pork and asparagus for green beans.

Szechuan Green Beans with Ground Pork

pork

cornstarch

salt

white pepper

peanut oil

(1-inch) cut green beans

garlic

hoisin sauce

sugar

red pepper

soy sauce

white rice

Combine the first 4 ingredients in a medium bowl. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add pork mixture, beans, and garlic; cook 3 minutes or until pork loses its pink color, stirring to crumble.


Combine hoisin and next 3 ingredients (through soy sauce) in a small bowl, stirring with a whisk. Add hoisin mixture to pan. Cook 2 minutes or until thoroughly heated, stirring frequently. Serve over rice.


I had fresh green beans, ground turkey and hoisin sauce. This exactly hit the spot (and my groceries-on-hand list).

I made this with frozen soy beef crumbles and used brown rice instead of white rice. I also used frozen green beans. Using the frozen ingredients made this extremely fast and simple and it tasted fantastic! Will make again for sure.

I made this last week.  I used haricot verts, and they were a bit tough. Next time I'll boil them for a few minutes first.  I didn't have any hoisin sauce, so I subbed oyster sauce.  Delicious!  And mom and dad approved!  Will definitely make again.

I made the recipe exactly as stated (as one should for a review), the only change was I had 1 lb. of ground pork so I did 2x the meat seasoning and 1.5x the sauce. It was the perfect amount of flavor. I have no idea why people say to double the sauce. Will definitely make over and over and over! 

forgot to say I used olive oil and potato starch instead since we avoid corn as well as sugar.

I made this in a pinch tonight with chicken breasts.  It was tasty!  I sliced the chicken into cutlets and used non-stick cooking spray instead of peanut oil. 

I also subbed brown sugar for the regular sugar and added a little bit of onion powder to the hoisin sauce.  Super Tasty! 

To my husband's disapproval, I doubled the green beans and left out the rice.  We love white rice, but we have been eating very late at night for that many carbs before bed. 

Over all, this was a super fast recipe and I enjoyed it so much.  Hubster doused his in teriyaki sauce (much to my dismay) but he really liked that it was light and he didn't overeat.

I don't normally modify a recipe but reading previous reviews, I added mushrooms with the green beans and cooked both separately from the meat - I used 1 lb. ground turkey which is more readily available.  I also doubled the sauce as suggested.  Absolutely delicious!  Very versatile recipe to modify a bit based on what you have in the kitchen.

This was very good.  I modified this a bit...Used two big stalks of broccoli and a bag of frozen beans to 'beef up' the veggie content.  Also added 1/2 an onion I had laying around from the night before.  Because of all of the veg - I quadrupled the sauce.  Added quite a bit of the hot peppers, but not all... It was rather spicy and quite good.  I'm sure I'll make this pretty often.  (I also cooked the garlic / onion / pork mixture first, set aside, then cooked the veg for a while - making sure they got cooked, then added back the pork and sauce and warmed through...)

So I made this tonight and was excited because I told my husband that I didn't see any bad reviews. I doubled the sauce like some of the reviews said. Maybe it was just my husband and I but we could taste the cornstarch. I'm also not of fan of white pepper... I think it smells like cow manure. (now go smell it and you'll know what I'm talking about). I'm very bummed about this, I won't be making this again!

This is super quick and delicious.  However, I always double the sauce.  It's just too dry with the amount that is specified in the recipe.

Really good!  I made with turkey.  My two young boys loved it!  The five year old asked for thirds!

Absolutely fabulous!  I used boneless pork chops that I sliced thinly.  Made my own hoisin sauce which was easy and delicious.  Family loved it.  Served it over jasmine rice.

This was really delicious! I ended up making my own hoisin sauce because how expensive it is in the store and saved some money! There is so much flavor packed into this dish and super easy to make. We halved the crushed red pepper because we thought it might be to spicy for myself and our kids and we would probably knock that down to 1/4 tsp of the red pepper, but other than that, it was so delicious. We have some leftover that I'll turn into a stir-fry too!

I did not have hoisin sauce so I substituted equal parts ketchup and dark kayro syrup. I also steamed my green beans for a few minutes before adding them to the pork. Served it over brown rice. It was delicious. Would definitely make it again. It was a great quick and easy week night meal. Would need to double the recipe if cooking for more than 2 or 3 people.

This recipe is delicious!  I used lean ground beef instead of pork just because that is what I had on hand and I double the garlic in every recipe that I make, but other than that, I followed the recipe.  I loved it and will make it again and again.  It is very easy to make and I have the ingredients in my kitchen at all times.  It is also a great way to use up an endless supply of green beans from the garden.

This was the FIRST dinner I prepared in 12 years of being married that I was asked, "Is there more still in the pan?"  I just about fell out of my chair.  However, I do now substitute ground beef for the pork because we're not big pork fans.

I'd love some ideas for other dishes that would be just a tasty as this one has been for us.

Quick and yummy!  I used 1/2 the amount of hoisin sauce, omitted the sugar and added a bit of the black bean paste one of the reviewers recommended.  Hoisin sauce is too sweet for my taste.  Made white rice in beef broth.  Used asparagus instead of the beans. Awesome.

I was very surprised at how full of flavor this dish was.  Looks very pretty on the plate and has just the right amount of spices. The two of us ate just about the whole thing.  Definitely a keeper!

I thought this was great and would make it again.  However, my wife and daughter thought it was pretty spicy so next time I will cut down the red pepper for them.  I also think I may cut the green beans by a 1/4 lb and replace it with another 1/4 lb of pork.  That is just a personal preference.

This is tasty, easy and fast--my favorite kind of recipe!  I added a couple of tablespoons of bean paste to give it more flavor and some chili garlic paste to give it some bite, then sprinkled it with sliced green onions at serving.  Husband loved it! Quick, satisfying supper after a hard day at work.

I love this recipe!  I doubled it for my family of 5 and it is GONE!  Excellent flavor and so quick and easy!  I think this will be a weeknight favorite!

My family loved this recipe. I also doubled it and added a little rice wine vinegar to the Hoison mixture. I'm usually not a fan of Hoison sauce, but this mixture was really good. We'll definately make this again!

This was tasty! The recipe only made enough for two of us but was delicious. I swapped in chili garlic paste for the chili flakes and think I'd use more than one tsp next time since we like a little heat. I also used a wok - otherwise the recipe is great as is!

I love this recipe. It is quick, easy and tasty. It is also easily adaptable - i've generally use  ground turkey instead of pork. sometimes i'll use brocoli instead of the green beans. whatever i have in the house. I leave out the red pepper and serve it on the side since i'm cooking for toddlers. its always a hit!

Great!! A quick and healthy recipe, easy to make and tastes terrific. I steamed the green beans for 5 minutes (per other reviewers) and added them to the pork mixture at the end. I also added 1/4 cup unsalted cashews, because cashews and green beans go together so well. It serves 2 - 3 people. Double the recipe if making for 4.

This is an easy and great tasting recipe.  I used ground chicken and served with brown rice.  I will make this again and again.

I love this recipe. It's my go-to stir fry recipe. The sauce is great, and I always have the ingredients on hand to make the sauce. So, when I'm in a pinch for dinner, I make the sauce, and then whatever combination of meat and veggies I have in the house at the time! The options are limitless, really. Last night I used fresh snow peas, broccoli, green onions, and mushrooms. It never fails! The one change I do make to the sauce recipe is I'll use thai chili garlic paste instead of the crushed red pepper. I like the flavor and it allows me to adjust the heat more predictably. Plus, I can put some extra paste on the table, and people can add their own if they want a little more spice. Simply a delicious and easy recipe!!!

Nice, hearty filling meal. This was very easy and quick to make. I can not tolerate things that are too hot and spicy, but had no problem with the recipe as is. I also added 1/4 cup of chopped cashews.

We love this recipe and usually double it. I'm thinking about making into an appetizer.....use pork mixture as wonton stuffing.

LOVE IT!  I doubled the recipe and I doubled the amount of crushed red pepper too and it was fine.  Added mushrooms, which was nice.  I served with brown rice and was tasty.  We like crispy veggies and didn't change how to cook the g. beans and thought it was perfect.

I used ground chicken instead so make sure you cook that before you add the green beans.  My family really liked the recipe, but it needs to be doubled!!!

This recipe is sooooo good. Not only is it quick and very easy to prepare, but it's delicious. I'm not usually a fan of hoison sauce, but the sauce in this recipe is really, really good. Perhaps it's the sugar? I double this recipe - all except for the crushed red pepper. 1 teaspoon for double the recipe is still plenty of heat for my family. This makes a great meal any time, but how wonderful that you can serve something this good on a weeknight.

This was great and easy.  I made the recipe exactly as written except needed to cook the pork mixture a little longer and used sesame oil because I didn't have peanut oil.  I know sesame oil is for low temp cooking but it tastes fine.  My Taiwanese friend makes a similar dish and serves over bok choy.  The hoisin sauce I have is from Whole Foods 365 and it's organic and tastes great.
