That Good Salad

canola oil

lemon juice

garlic cloves,

salt

pepper

(1 pound each) romaine, torn

tomatoes

Swiss cheese

slivered almonds, toasted, optional

Parmesan cheese

bacon strips, cooked and crumbled

Caesar salad croutons

My Mother & I have been making this salad for years. We put the Parmesan cheese in the dressing to help it mix in better.

Since finding this recipe, I've made it several times. My husband and I love it! Like other posters I don't care for Swiss Cheese, however, I believe in making the recipe as is the first time around "as is". I found cheese did not bother me at all. We'll be making this for years to come.

I so wanted to love this salad because I love all the ingredients and its presentation, but I found it bland and apparently others I served it to did also. I served it at a party and people politely said it was good but nobody asked for the recipe or what was in the dressing, (unlike the "Crunchy Apple Mixed Green Salad," I made the previous year that had multiple people asking for the recipe and actually still raving about it a year later)!If I were a chef I would know how to perk up the dressing and make this salad a winner (for my palate -- clearly it's a winner for others'), but sadly, I have no clue.

I have made this several times and my family loves it. We substitute an Italian cheese blend for the Swiss since one family member does not like Swiss. We found it to be a great summer dinner.

My family loved this! My kids usually only eat ranch or Caesar as a dressing so wasn't sure how this would go but they enjoyed it. Substituted olive oil for canola and candied pecans for almonds because I had some as a holiday gift. Making it again soon!

Kind of a basic salad and yet it is always a winner when I make it. When they learn this is the salad that will on the table with dinner, you may just hear a cheer of joy from my son.

In 1997, as a newlywed, I subscribed to Taste of Home magazine and came across this recipe. I still am expected to bring it to gatherings...that's how much my friends and family enjoy it! I use a five cheese Italian style blend instead of Swiss because of personal preference. Also, I add extra garlic and black pepper to the dressing while cutting down just a bit on the oil.

I've made this salad, AT LEAST, 100 times!! I always use olive oil in place of the canola. I use grape tomatoes and sometimes I omit the croutons. Oh, and I use the package of 3 heads of romaine. I love this recipe because its tasty and it feeds a large number of people.

Salad is fine but the dressing is seriously lacking.  I made this as part of a meal for a crowd of 60 and most plates went to the trash with most of the salad untouched.  Several thought it was missing vinegar and I have to agree.  It was just a near flavorless oily dressing without it.

This was a great recipe.  I did add a tsp of sugar to the dressing.

This is our go-to salad. We have it about once a week. I use microwave bacon & it’s super quick & delicious.

This recipe takes salad to a whole new level!!  Delicious!!  I used Le Gruyere swiss and cherry tomatoes.  Also didn't have canola oil so I used light tasting olive oil.  Can't wait to make it again.

I have made this recipe at least 15 times over the last couple of years -- it is my go-to salad.  No changes needed!

I made this salad for the first time and omitted almonds since they were optional!  I just used bacon strips which were smoked and I  really enjoyed this salad recipe plus the dressing! I thank you for this recipe, Betty Lamb!

This salad really is great! I wasn’t sure about the dressing until I added it to the salad and mixed it in good, no let downs with the recipe. I actually made it as our dinner and my daughter and husband loved it.

I didn't have Canola oil so I used olive oil.  It was very good.  Everybody loved it.

I have to agree with the name, this was so good!  I added grilled chicken and hard boiled eggs to make lunch for my husband and I.  He loved it!

We looooove this salad; I often get recipe requests. I appreciate the advice from the reviewer who said she doubles the cheese when she has to omit the bacon for vegetarians... I tried tonight with friends who don't eat pork, and was happy to see them go for seconds. You just can't go wrong with this salad.

My boys wouldn't eat lettuce salads of any kind until I made this.They polished it off and asked me to make more

we made the dressing but we did not like - i whipped up some homemade ranch (pack)n drizzled it on top and tossed it up abit... turned out better - 2nd time around!

I must agree with Lauriesmiles, after reading the reviews, just had to make this salad.Unfortunately the dressing ruined it

We really liked this salad. Had to make a couple of substitutions. My daughter does not like Swiss cheese so we used an Italian blend and I had grape tomatoes in the fridge so we used them instead of chopping tomatoes. That said, even with the amount it made there wasn't any left after dinner. Next time, I will add some cooked chicken to it and serve it as dinner with some fresh rolls. But it will be made a lot in our home. Thanks.
