When it comes time for summer, I can't resist making a salad bursting with ingredients from the local markets. For best results, make the salad without ever refrigerating the tomatoes but with the watermelon cold from the refrigerator. The contrast of temperatures will give the salad an extra fresh taste.

Tomato and Watermelon Salad

balsamic vinegar

lemon juice

olive oil

beefsteak (or other large variety) tomatoes, stemmed, washed and dried

cherry tomatoes, stemmed, washed and dried

tarragon leaves

strawberries, hulled, washed and cut into very small pieces

Maldon sea salt

black pepper

superfine (or granulated) sugar

In a bowl, whisk together the balsamic, lemon juice, and olive oil. Taste for seasoning. Set aside.

Place the tomatoes on a flat surface. Cut the smaller ones in half and the larger ones into slices. Arrange all of them in a single layer, flesh side up. Season them with salt, black pepper and sugar. Drizzle the tomatoes with the dressing. Toss them with the tarragon and strawberries.

Arrange the tomatoes down the length of 6 rectangular plates. Drizzle with the remaining dressing and top with the watermelon. Serve immediately.

Loved this!  Had both yellow watermelon and tomatoes on hand (and no tarragon) - surprising but delicious flavors!

Not good at all.  Dressing  was very bland, strawberries added nothing.  I've made many better versions of this salad.

Very unexpected, but awesome. Didn't use strawberries, and subbed fresh basil for the tarragon. Completely surprised that I like watermelon/basil/dressing blend the most. Very refreshing, light recipe.

I grow my own tomatoes and tarragon  Tomatoes still warm from the sun and ice cold watermelon.  Left out the sugar because a diebtic was at dinner.  Loved the contrast.  Make sure you use sea salt.  Makes a difference even from kosher salt!!! Love

I tried this with reservations - I just wasn't sure about tomatoes and watermelon together.  What a surprise!  This was fresh and tasty!  A real crowd pleaser.  Unfortunately it didn't hold up as left overs.  I had been looking forward to having some the next day but I was disappointed.  Really is something to be eaten fresh.

This is a great summer salad, especially if the ingredients are at their peak! It has a great blend of flavors and is refreshing.

I made this for my garden club's end of year salad supper.  <br />Almost everyone kept asking "who made the salad with the strawberries and watermelon?"  Tangy and fresh- just be sure to use really good tomatoes like fresh- off -the- vine ripe or a brand like "Campari" which are sold in packages at our local grocery store. 

I made this as a side for a dinner party and it was a huge hit. Some people didn't want the watermelon added and still loved it.  It was an easy, elegant dish to accompany a summer menu. I ran out quickly and had so many requests for the recipe.
