Triple Bean Bake with Bacon

bacon strips,

onion (about 1 medium)

(15-1/2 ounces) great northern beans, undrained

(16 ounces) butter beans, rinsed and drained

(16 ounces) kidney beans, rinsed and drained

brown sugar

horseradish

yellow mustard

I've also added about 1/4 cup of honey, maple syrup or molasses, and catsup.  Yummy!

My mother makes this and also adds pork 'n bean, lima beans, and hamburger meat. Very good. I love this recipe

I would recommend making the recipe exactly as written. These are great the way it is. All the reviewers who are saying they added tomato based products or ground beef are making a different recipe than what this one is intended to be. This simple sauce highlights the flavor of the beans without covering them with a thick tomato based sauce. If you are looking for traditional baked beans, this is not that recipe! If you are looking for a new, unique flavor for a bean dish that is baked, try this one! My family loves this recipe and I have made it often. The sweet, tangy, spicy combo is just right, but still allows the flavor of the beans to be the focus.

how easy does this look? looks like a winner to me, plus I have all ingreds except butter beans but I do have other canned beans I'll use. can't wait-thanks for sharing

I've had this same recipe for 25 years, and it is still a staple at family gatherings. Excellent, except I cut the horseradish in half.

I like this better after #1/2 of browned ground beef was added.  Then I can use it as a meal instead of just a side.  Also to judiec24go, why rate it without trying.  If you hate butter beans double up on the ones you like and leave them out.  It probably would not change the over all taste that much.  (I prefer the light kidney beans so I changed it the second time around and the taste was almost the same.)  Try something or don't complain and give it a bad rating.  It also sounds good with the pork and beans added.  Gonna try that next time.

I would love to try this recipe but I don't eat bacon.  What could I use to substitue, please no pork.

I think this recipe has potential but as is I was quite disappointed.  The tablespoon of mustard drowned out all of the other flavors including the horseradish!  I will, however, try again without it because I love horseradish and hope to taste that zing next time around.  I did swap out the butter beans for seasoned pinto beans as I do not care for them.

Omg so good and so easy.  I started eating them before baking.  Had to stop or 8 servings would have become 6 very fast.  Keeper for sure!  And for judiec24go use another kind of bean.  Don't pass up this recipe because you don't care for butter beans.

These were a hit!  I had to subsitute Lima Beans for the Butter Beans as my store doesn't carry butter beans.  I will definitely make these again!

Made with 3 of my favorite beans. The sauce is tangy and sweet. This is great for a summer BBQ.My family loves it.

<p>I prepared this recipe 7/2/14 and I did make adjustments to it by using a 16-oz. can of vegetarian baked beans, a can of red kidney beans, rinsed and drained, a can of butter beans,  rinsed and drained and a can of navy beans, rinsed and drained. I didn't use Great Northern beans, but I had purchased the can for future use!  I purchased a package of smoked pork neck with bones  and used that instead of the bacon.  I also finely chopped the onion and added it to the beans.  Instead of 1 Tbsp. of yellow mustard, I'd used 2 tsp. spicy brown mustard.  I covered the baking dish with foil and cut vents in the foil to allow the steam to escape.  I'd placed the pork neck/bones on top of bean mixture   before baking.  I then baked the casserole at 350o  F. instead of 325o F.   I'd had several other recipes for baked beans from Taste of Home, in which I used a 350o  F. oven.  For me this worked out well.  I baked the dish 30 minutes, covered at 350o F., then 1 hour, uncovered.  I then cooled the meat by running cold water over it and then cut the pork in small pieces and added to the bean mixture. I found that I needed to allow the mixture to cool so that flavors could blend.  This morning, I added 2 tsp. horseradish and 2 Tbsp. hickory-smoked BBQ sauce.  I felt that the bean dish was more flavorful after allowing it to cool.  The next time I prepare this dish, I'll probably use 1 cup of Hormel prepared cooked and crumbled bacon in place of the pork.  I'd also add the horseradish and BBQ sauce to dish when preparing it! This IS a very tasty dish and I'm glad that I tried it!  Oh, yes!  I'd added 1/4 cup of maple syrup to the bean dish in place of brown sugar as I'd used baked beans!  I'm finding out that this type of bean dish doesn't need a lot of sugar!  But then again, there are people who DO prefer to use the brown sugar and other people who probably test the recipe with less sugar! I do enjoy baked beans and the various ways to make dishes calling for legumes such as lentils, kidney beans, Great Northern beans, navy beans, butter beans, black beans, black-eyed peas, etc.  I was thinking-using ground beef or even ground turkey sounds like a great idea from the other raters & reviewers which I'd spotted on the rating/review list for this recipe! That is also true-adding ground beef (or in my opinion, ground turkey, that really sounds much more like a main dish!  Who knows-I just might try that sometime! delowenstein</p>

I make these with browned hamburger also. I use a bit of vinegar and less brown sugar. Mine calls for catsup also. Absolutely love the taste as it almost makes a meal in itself. They're always a hit at family potlucks.

Love the ease of this recipe and how I can swap out different kinds of beans if I want. I also add about 1/2 pound of browned ground beef to the mix. One of my most requested dishes at a potluck!

My family, who doesn't usually like baked beans, loved this dish!  It's not the typical tomato base.  It's a little different, but very good.

The horseradish is the secret ingredient.  Everyone loves these beans!  OK to put all the ingredients together and put it in a crockpot after you cook the bacon and onions on the stove.

Finally a bean dish that the family liked!

I really expected this recipe to be tasty given all the great ingredients but it seemed lacking in flavor to my husband and I.

 I always try a recipe the way it is written the 1st time and the next time I make substitutions/changes based on my personal preferences. It is certainly no reflection on the recipe that my taste buds have a mind of their own.

While I found this recipe not to have enough flavour my husband liked the sweetness and asked for seconds.
