Ingredients: 4 McIntosh apples, peeled and sliced (about 2 lb.); ½ cup firmly packed light brown sugar; 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon; ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg; 2 tablespoons water; 1 tablespoon butter

This simple spiced apples recipe is perfect for so many applications. The tender, brown sugar-sweetened fruit slices are great served at breakfast, make for a warm and tasty side dish (especially for kiddos), are the ideal flavor complement spooned over pork chops or a pork loin, and are an amazing seasonal addition to a bowl of vanilla ice cream. If you can't find McIntosh apples, substitute another baking apple such as Rome or Gala; or to change things up, try a crisp, tart green apple such as Granny Smith.

Warm Cinnamon Apples

McIntosh apples, peeled and sliced (about 2 lb.)

brown sugar

cinnamon

nutmeg

water

butter

Toss together first 4 ingredients in a large zip-top plastic bag, tossing to coat apples.


Cook apple mixture, 2 Tbsp. water, and 1 Tbsp. butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring occasionally, 8 to 10 minutes or until apples are tender.


I just cooked this dish, and it was fantastic. I did make a minor adjustment though. I added orange juice instead of water. Delicious, easy, and fun. Growing up in Germany, my grandmother often served us what is called "Heaven and Earth". It is cooked apples put on top of a heap of mashed potatoes. I served this recipe on Jam powder mash. Healthier, and just fantastic. 

Made the house smell so good and was great for a cold morning side.  Also served with pancakes a few days later.

I needed something fast for my 17 month old son who has to be gluten, dairy, and egg free. Breakfast foods are especially hard! I tried these with some dairy free butter (Earth Balance) and he loved them! He kept saying, "Ap-PULL" and smiling. Very easy and quick!

This is a quick delicious side we like to throw together when we're having waffles or pancakes. It's super easy and always delicious! 

I don't ever add the extra water, though. It really doesn't need it.

No need to add so much water in my opinion.  Apples will produce enough juice to create the syrup.

These are delicious and so easy to make.  After slicing, I also cut them in half for the little mouths in my family.  I have served them over French toast, pancakes, and stirred into oatmeal.  But I imagine, they would be fabulous served warm, over vanilla ice cream with cinnamon sugar pie crust triangles -  a deconstructed apple pie a la mode.  Gotta go try that. . .

This recipe is awsome. It's simple and yummy. I made a double batch and my kids and family devoured it. I'm on a diet, but, I enjoyed it VERY much...

This was fabulous. I just made it for breakfast.
