Step 1
In a small bowl, mix the sugar with the warm water. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it rest for about 15 minutes until it begins to foam.
Step 2
In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, salt, and olive oil. Make a well in the middle and add the foamy yeast mixture once it's ready.
Step 3
Knead the dough by hand for around 10 minutes or with a standing mixing machine for 5 minutes.Your dough should become beautifully smooth and elastic. There should be no residue left on the sides of your bowl.
Step 4
Move the ball of dough to a highly floured bowl and cover with a damp towel for about 45 minutes until the dough has doubled in size.
Step 5
In the meantime, prepare your Flammkuchen toppings to have them handy for the assembly. Preheat the oven to 185C/ 365F.
Step 6
When the dough is ready, knock it back and divide into four equal parts. Roll each part into the desired shape for your Flammkuchen. You should try and roll the dough as thinly as you can manage.
Step 7
Transfer the dough onto a baking sheet. Add the desired toppings and bake in the centre of the oven for around 5-7 minutes until the sides of your Flammkuchen is golden-brown at the edges.
