Step 1

Preheat oven to 175C.

Step 2

Beat and cream the butter or margarine and sugar together until well combined.

Step 3

Add the orange zest and egg yolk. Mix until combined.

Step 4

Add the flour, salt, ground cardamom, and poppy seeds in a mixing bowl and mix to form a soft dough.

Step 5

Refrigerate for 15-20 minutes until firm, if required.

Step 6

Roll into 2 logs and chill again on a tray lined with wax paper or foil for 30 minutes until firm.

Step 7

Slice logs into 1 cm thick rounds and place 2½ cm apart on a nonstick or lined tray.

Step 8

Bake for 12-15 minutes until biscuits are slightly golden on the edges.

Step 9

Cool on tray until firm, remove and store in an air-tight container.
