French Onion Melt

butter

onions,

salt

black pepper

thyme leaves

dry sherry

(4 ounces) shredded or sliced Jarlsberg, Gruyère or Swiss cheese

(1/2-inch-thick) diagonally cut French bread slices

Butter, softened

Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add onions, and cook, stirring occasionally, 30 minutes or until dark golden brown. Stir in salt and next 3 ingredients.


Place 1/4 cup cheese on each of 2 bread slices. Top each evenly with half of onion mixture. Top each with 1/4 cup cheese. Top with remaining 2 bread slices.


Spread outside of sandwiches with softened butter. Cook in a nonstick skillet over medium heat 2 minutes on each side or until cheese melts and bread is golden brown.


this was really good.  I'm always on the lookout for Meatless Monday recipes that don't require a ton of prep.  As far as adding meat to this dish, WHY?  It is not supposed to be some take off on a soup or sandwich with meat; it is a takeoff of French Onion Soup.  Also, please don't put up a review of the recipe if you haven't made it yet.  when you add a review before making the dish you are simply reviewing the ingredients and that is NOT a review.

I adored this! To the other previous reviewer...sometimes simple is best. If you are looking to make a Philly cheesesteak you should do a search for that!

Sounds like a good start....just need to add some french onion soup on the side for dipping!

Very clever title for what is basically a grilled caramelized onion and cheese sandwich. Seems that something is missing. How about a pile of rare roast beef? Oh, now we are turning it into a Philly cheese steak sandwich, aren't we. Nothing new under the sun.
