In a large skillet or saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat.

Add the chopped onion and sauté for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent.

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for 1–2 minutes until fragrant.

Add the crushed San Marzano tomatoes to the skillet, stirring to combine.

Add kosher salt, black pepper, oregano, and red pepper flakes (if using).

Stir in the red wine if using, and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.

Reduce the heat to low and simmer uncovered for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld.

Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with more salt or pepper if needed.

Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before serving for added freshness.
