Possum Pie

cream cheese, softened

confectioners' sugar

graham cracker crust (9 inches)

pecans

whole milk

vanilla extract

vanilla pudding mix

chocolate pudding mix

heavy whipping cream, whipped

pecan halves

This pie actually has distinct layers. The crust with nuts, cream cheese layer, mild chocolate layer because of vanilla and chocolate mixed, and then the whipped topping. Really a delicious treat. Maybe this explanation will help clear up any confusion. Also there is an old saying in the South about "playing possum" when kids are pretending to be asleep. The pie name is very unassuming but is really a special dessert that may surprise.

This is the basically same recipe as Robert Redford's Favorite dessert except for the crust.  The original has a shortbread crust and is make in a 9"x13" pan.  The result is fantastic and I love the graham cracker crust which makes the whole thing a lot easier.  Yes, you do mix the two puddings together which isn't clear as written here.

As my son said "scrumdiddlyumptious!" Made as directed with one modification  - my son doesn't like pecans, so I used crushed heath bar instead of pecans. VERY easy to put together (better if your crust doesn't break apart like mine did). Next time I will probably use Cool Whip for the top layer instead of whipping it myself. But it was VERY good and perfect for Christmas dessert!

I have a recipe that was given to me called Impossible Pie and I always double it and put it in a 13x9. I've been making it for over 30 years, and it's almost identical to this one. I don't use the pecans, or any nuts. However,  it's so versatile,  you can use any flavor pudding, and I often change the crust, meaning you can use an oreo crust, etc.

For the whipped cream, add about an eighth of a cup of powdered sugar to the ice cold heavy cream and a 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract, whip until stiff peaks form. When you pull the whisk attachment out, the cream should stand up or, if you feel daring, you can turn the bowl upside down and the whipped cream should stay in the bowl. If it falls out, you needed to whip it longer.

Made as directed. I had not heard of this pie before was new to us. Loved that it was interesting, not difficult to make and not much of a gamble to serve to folks with different tastes. I felt like it could be amped up though with something fruity (fresh berries?) or a drizzle of fudge...something else. Tasty, but not our family's favorite.

This pie is delicious!   I found that the recipe instructions were easy to follow.  I don’t think there is any need to add confectioners sugar to the whipping cream.  There is enough sweetness in the puddings and the cream cheese layer.  This dessert is light and not too sweet!  I’m looking forward to making it again when we have company.

3 stars because we followed the recipe as written but it lacked any wow factor. Wish I could add an extra half star however since it was so very easy to make and my granddaughter felt like she made it by herself!! Don't know that the vanilla pudding mix was necessary. Could simply have increased the chocolate pudding mix and arrived at the same result.

Boy, this sure sounds and looks good, but talk about controversial.  The only thing missing from the recipe itself that I could see was the recipe for the whipped cream.  But then, one of the reviewers offered a good one for that.  Looks like a quick and easy recipe to prepare.  On my list of trys for the Holidays.  Thank you, David and TOH, for sharing.

Needs to have better instructions for all them young bakers that are starting out; even the young tweens.
Only giving it 1 star due to the fact of the poor instructions.  It could actually provide more detail or show step by step instructions.

The recipe is fine, but the directions were kind of terrible. If there was a step by step with more detail I wouldn't have freaked out trying to make this for my friend.

made this for Thanksgiving.making again today for a potluck tonight....we love it!

This dessert is so creamy and rich.  So easy to make.  Everyone asks for the recipe when I make this.Definitely a keeper!!!

Very good - nice on a hot day. Had to use 1 cup instead of a 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream.
