Step 1

Sauté the beef with the onion and bell pepper in a skillet over a moderate to high heat.

When the meat is browned all the way through, drain off the excess grease.

Turn the heat right down and add the water, ketchup, sugar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder.

Stir well then cook for about 10 minutes or until the sauce is thick.

Meanwhile, preheat the broiler to a high heat.

Put the Texas toast on a baking sheet and toast under the broiler until golden and crisp.

Top each Texas toast with a slice of cheese, then broil for a further 30 seconds.

Step 8

Divide the Sloppy Joes mixture between each piece of Texas toast.

Step 9

Top with another slice of cheese.

Step 10

Broil until the cheese on top has melted, then serve hot.
