These delicious apple dumplings are like personal apple pies with a delicious brown sugar caramel.

Apple Dumplings

pie crusts (unbaked)

apples

sugar (100 grams)

cinnamon (divided)

brown sugar

Set oven to 350F, place your chilled pie dough on the counter to warm, then combine the granulated sugar and 2 tsp of cinnamon in a small bowl, mix together and set aside.

Roll your pie dough into rectangles which are a bit less than 1/4 inch thick then cut into 7 inch squares. Re-roll scraps as needed until you have 8 squares. You can use excess dough to stamp decorative elements for the dumplings.

Peel and core the apples then place each apple on the center of a pastry square. Fill  almost to the top with cinnamon sugar then place a teaspoon of butter on top.

Bring the corners of the pastry up to the top of the apple one at a time. You can wet the tips with your finger so they stick better. Place the apples in baking dishes so they are touching as little as possible. I usually use two 9x13 dish but you can use a larger dish Is you have one. The apples will look best If you brush with an egg wash and sprinkle with any remaining cinnamon sugar.

To make the sauce combine brown sugar, cinnamon, butter and water in a small pot. Place over medium head and cook while stirring until the butter melts then pour the sauce into the baking dishes.

Bake at 350F for 50-60 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown and the apples are softened. You can test the doneness of the apples using a skewer.

Old-Fashioned Apple Dumplings are made with sweet cinnamon-sugar apples wrapped up in an easy, flaky pastry and baked in a homemade cinnamon syrup. We love them served warm with a scoop of ice cream and some caramel syrup to drizzle over the top!

Preheat oven to 425°F.

Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, sugar, and shortening in a large bowl. Use a pastry cutter to cut the shortening into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs. This step can also be done in a food processor. Add the milk and stir with a fork just until the dough clumps together. Cover with plastic wrap and set aside in the fridge.

Peel and core the apples using a paring knife or apple peeler.

Roll out the pastry dough on a lightly floured surface. Cut into large squares and place an apple in the center of each square. Divide the butter, sugar, and cinnamon evenly between each of the apples.

Wrap the pastry up around each apple, pinching the edges together to seal. Transfer to a 9x13-inch baking dish.

Make the syrup by combining the water, sugar, butter, and cinnamon in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook until the butter is melted and the sugar is completely dissolved. Pour the hot syrup over the apple dumplings in the baking dish.

Bake for 35-40 minutes until golden brown and the apples pierce easily with a sharp knife. Cool for at least 15 minutes before serving.
