Braided Apple Puff Pastry

Preheat the oven to 400°F. On a parchment lined sheet tray, unfold the puff pastry sheet.

Spread the apple pie filling down the center of the pastry, between the two lines. Sprinkle the ground cinnamon on top.

Make 8 diagonal cuts facing the bottom of the pastry on each side of the filling. Cut off the bottom part of the pastry flaps and the top part of the pastry flaps, leaving the center pieces intact. Fold the top over the filling, then alternating sides, lay the pieces of pastry on top of each other to mimic a braid. When you get to the bottom, before the last two braid sections on each side, fold the bottom part of the pastry over the filling, continue with the last two braided sections.

In a small bowl, whisk the egg with a splash of water to make an egg wash. Brush the egg wash all over the pastry. Sprinkle the coarse sugar on top. Bake for 18-20 minutes until golden brown. Let cool for 10 minutes, slice and serve

Puff Pastry Apple Strudel Recipe: Quick and Easy

Preheat the oven to 375ºF. Line a baking sheet with a parchment paper and set aside.

To make the apple filling, peel, core, and chop apples into 1/2-inch cubes. You will need total 3 cups of chopped apples. Place them in a bowl and add 2 tablespoon of white sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Toss well and set aside for 15 minutes so the apple can release its juice.

Meanwhile, combine nuts, brown sugar, the remaining 2 tablespoon of white sugar, and breadcrumbs in another small bowl. Stir well and set aside.

To assemble the strudel, roll out the thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured work surface to stretch out a little, about 10x12-inch. Sprinkle half of nut mixture in the center of the pastry leaving 1-inch from both sides. Spoon half of apple mixture on top of nut mixture.

Lift the front side of pastry and fold over the filling. Lift the opposite side of pastry and fold over. Pinch the sides down to seal. Carefully transfer the strudel to a prepared baking sheet, placing the seam-side down. Tuck both ends under. Repeat the same on the other pastry sheet.

Brush the strudels with egg wash and make slits for the steam to escape. Bake the strudel in a preheated 375˚F oven for 40-45 minutes until golden brown. Let the pastry cool for 10 minutes.

Dust with powdered sugar and serve warm with vanilla ice cream and/or whipped cream.

Quick puff pastry apple rings (donuts) - a perfect cozy fall treat that tastes like apple pie! Wrap cinnamon sugar flavored apple slices with puff pastry strips, then bake them until sweet, tender, and flaky!

You can watch the video in the post for visual instructions.First, thaw the puff pastry if it’s frozen and prepare it according to its instructions (many require you to leave it at room temp for a while before use). Then, preheat the oven to 400F/205C.

Next, slice the apples into about 1/2-inch (1.2 cm) rounds, coring them with a small round cookie cutter (about 1 1/2 inches / 4 cm wide) or a paring knife.You can peel the apples if preferred, but I left them on for extra fiber and nutrients.

Combine the coconut sugar and cinnamon in a wide, shallow dish. Working one at a time, press each apple ring into the cinnamon sugar mixture on both sides.

Next, unroll the puff pastry and carefully roll it with a rolling pin/bottle until it’s just a little thinner and larger.

Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the puff pastry into 1-inch (2.5 cm) strips crosswise, then cut them in half across the middle (so they aren’t as long).

Wrap the puff pastry strips around the apple rings (I used 3-4 strips per apple ring) with some slight overlap.

Then, brush them with the milk and sprinkle with more cinnamon sugar.

Transfer the puff pastry-wrapped apple slices to a parchment paper-lined baking tray, with space in-between, and bake for 18-22 minutes, or until the puff pastry is flaky and golden brown and the apple slices are tender.

Finally, remove them from the oven and allow them to cool for a few minutes. Optionally drizzle them with salted caramel sauce (or serve it as a dip) or your toppings of choice, and enjoy!

Apple Turnovers from Puff Pastry

Combine the peeled, cored, and diced apples with sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon in a small saucepot. Toss to coat evenly.

Taste and adjust the sugar, lemon juice, or cinnamon as desired. Bring to a simmer over medium-low heat and cook until the apples release some moisture.

In a small bowl, whisk together cornstarch and water. Add the cornstarch to the apple mixture and stir until well incorporated. Increase the heat as needed and boil for 1 minute.

Pour the mixture onto a plate and refrigerate until it is chilled. You don’t want to put hot filling in cold puff pastry, or you’ll get no puff because the butter will melt and the layers will disappear!

Prepare the apple filling:

If using frozen, store-bought puff pastry, you’ll want to thaw the puff pastry sheets in the refrigerator before unrolling. It will only take about 30 minutes. I recommend thawing in the fridge rather than at room temperature, because they could easily become too warm and then won’t puff up.

On a lightly floured surface, roll out the cold puff pastry into a 12 x 24-inch rectangle. For optimal results, chill the dough for 20-30 minutes before cutting and assembling.

Place either your homemade puff pastry or the 2 sheets of store-bought puff on your lightly floured surface. Cut each of the store-bought pieces into quarters, roughly in half in both directions, using a pie wheel or pizza cutter.

Brush approximately half of each square with egg wash, then place a large dollop of cooled apple filling in the center. Be sure to leave about ½ inch from all the edges free from filling to ensure a good seal.

Fold each square in half along the diagonal to form a triangle, press the edges gently to seal. Crimp the edges with a fork and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Repeat with all turnovers.

Chill the shaped apple turnovers for at least 30 minutes, but ideally an hour. While the turnovers chill, preheat the oven to 400°F and line a new baking sheet with parchment paper.

Assemble the turnovers:

Place the chilled turnovers on the room-temperature baking tray about 2 inches apart. You can alternate them so they fit more on the sheet. Brush each lightly with egg wash and then cut 2-3 slits in the top of each turnover.

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes until golden brown and puffed. The bake time is mainly about the puff pastry baking fully because we have already cooked the filling.

Cool slightly on a wire rack and serve warm or at room temperature.

Bake the turnovers:

These turnovers were simple to put together and came out perfectly puffed and golden. The filling was sweet but not too sweet, and I loved that I didn’t have to fuss with complicated steps!
