My Scotch-whisky-inflected alternative to a Jack Rose.

Autumn Bonfire

nonalcoholic apple cider or juice

smoky Scottish whisky (I like Bowmore 12)

maple syrup

bitters (I prefer Brooklyn Hemispherical Black Mission Fig, but Angostura works, too).

Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. Stir for 30 seconds. Strain into a cocktail glass (or serve over fresh ice in a rocks glass). Garnish with an apple fan or a slice of apple.

A variation on the Apple Jack Rabbit from Harry Craddock&#039;s seminal work The Savoy Cocktail Book, the Apple Jack was created by the late Sasha Petraske at his famous bar Milk &amp; Honey.It&#039;s a simple drink to make and we strongly advise using Laird&#039;s Straight Apple Brandy Bottled in Bond.  It will stand up to the other ingredients better than a lower proof Applejack or Calvados.

Apple Jack Cocktail

Brandy

½ oz Apple juice

½ oz Fresh lemon juice

¼ oz Simple syrup

Add all ingredients to your trusty shaker.

Add ice and shake until frosty cold.

Strain into pre-chilled coupe.  No garnish.

Drink.

Rinse and repeat.
