Crispy BBQ Tofu Sandwich topped with cool, creamy cilantro cabbage slaw and avocado, that can be made in under 30 minutes. Vegan!

Crispy BBQ Tofu Sandwich

block tofu- organic, extra firm, drained

olive oil or coconut oil

salt

pepper

BBQ Sauce (aim corn syrup, or make your own)

chili paste

buns, (like brioche buns) toasted

Avocado- optional, messy but good. 😉

¼ cup cilantro, chopped

red onion, thinly sliced

vegan mayo (or regular mayo) or

vinegar- Apple Cider

Drain the block of tofu, pat dry, and cut into one-inch-thick slabs. Trim if needed to fit the bun. You can get 2, maybe 3 out of one block. Pat dry again.

Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil, and sprinkle the salt and pepper over the oil. Once the pepper is fragrant, carefully add the tofu. Sear until crispy and deeply golden- do not move it around in the pan, let it develop a crust, so it will release itself. Lower heat if splattering- this will take about 12 minutes.

Mix the BBQ sauce and red chili paste in a small bowl and set aside.

Place the shredded cabbage in a medium bowl, add onions and cilantro, mayo, vinegar, and salt, and toss to combine well. Taste. It should be creamy, tangy and flavorful. Feel free to add more vinegar, salt or mayo to attain this. All mayos are different!

Once the tofu is nice and crispy, lower the heat to low, and add the bbq sauce mixture, coating the tofu well. I use all the sauce. Let it caramelize just slightly in the pan, and turn the heat off.

Assemble the Sandwich

Spread more mayo on the bottom bun if you like, add the hot tofu, and top with cool slaw and a few slices of avocado.

Made this for dinner at my husband’s request and boy did he LOVE it! We do a little trick with the tofu and freeze it before cooking it. It makes a huge difference in the texture it has the texture of chicken and tastes very close to chicken when you fry it such as this recipe. We will definitely make this again.

Outstanding!! Made this for my husbands birthday dinner and it was a huge hit. Followed the recipe exactly. Didn’t change a thing and it was perfect.

Yum! Loved this. I seared about 7 min per side- I was afraid it would burn, but didn’t. I cut my block into thirds.  Might add extra bbbq sauce to each side of the bun next time. This is a keeper!

All I could taste was apple cider vinegar. It overpowered the bbq sauce and the slaw. Such a waste to throw everything away these days when everything is so expensive. After spending all afternoon prepping everything and then cooking, I ended up making myself a pbj sandwich for dinner :( sigh…..

This vegan BBQ tofu sandwich delivers the taste and feel of summer barbecue cookouts any time of the year. An easy vegan copycat McRib sandwich made with barbecue sauce-smothered baked tofu, pickles and onions. I&#x27;ve added avocado to add creaminess, but feel free to skip it or use vegan mayo. Meat free, dairy free, gluten free if made with a gluten free bun.

Easy Vegan BBQ Tofu Sandwich Recipe

Drain and press a block of tofu to squeeze out the liquid. Put the tofu between two heavy cutting boards, or use a tofu press. Press the tofu for about 20 minutes or up to 1 hour.

Bake the tofu pieces for 12 minutes, then flip and bake 8-10 more minutes until it just begins to develop crispy, slightly golden edges. Take the tofu out and brush the top of each piece with BBQ sauce. It’s OK if things look messy.

Return the tofu back into the oven and...

Return the tofu back into the oven and bake for another 5-6 minutes. Take it out, flip, and brush the side that didn't get any sauce on it yet. Return to the oven and bake another 4-5 minutes.

The tofu is done once its edges are...

The tofu is done once its edges are firm to the touch (don't break if you press them with a finger). Take the tofu out and rub with a bit more barbecue sauce if you like it extra saucy. Tofu can be made up to a week in advance and stored in the fridge before you make the sandwiches.

Split the sandwich rolls in half and toast...

Split the sandwich rolls in half and toast lightly. Spread avocado slices (if using) on the top part of each roll. Arrange the barbecue tofu on the bottom part, about 4 pieces per sandwich. Brush with more barbecue sauce if you'd like. Top with pickles and onions.
