Learn how to make buttercream frosting with this easy tutorial. I've been making this homemade American buttercream frosting recipe for years! It's perfect for piping on cupcakes, decorating cakes and is a simple starting point for other buttercream frosting flavors.

How to Make Buttercream Frosting

(170 grams) unsalted butter, cold.

(260 grams-390 grams) powdered sugar

(5 milliliters) vanilla extract

(15 milliliters) heavy whipping cream (or milk)

salt (optional)

(339 grams) unsalted butter, cold.

(650 grams) powdered sugar

(12 milliliters) vanilla extract

(567 grams) unsalted butter, cold

(1041-1301 grams) powdered sugar

(15 milliliters) vanilla extract

Cut the butter into pieces. Using the paddle attachment, whip the butter for 3-5 minutes, scraping down the bowl occasionally. Beat until the butter looks light in color and has increased in volume.

Add 2 cups of powdered sugar at a time and mix on low speed until incorporated into butter then continuing adding additional powdered sugar, alternating with the vanilla extract and heavy cream.  After each additional of 2 cups of powdered sugar, beat for about 60 seconds on medium-high or until the powdered sugar is well combined.

Increase speed to medium-high and beat for another 3-5 minutes to whip additional air into the frosting.

OMG this is the best buttercream frosting ever.  I made it for the first time yesterday and my family raved. We used to get our birthday cakes from a bakery and my grandson said the frosting tasted just like theirs I agree. You cannot go wrong with this recipe. Thank you for publishing it.

This recipe is very similar to my regular go-to Buttercream recipe - my biggest concern is how to get those really brilliant/rich colors without completely altering the delicious taste of my Vanilla Buttercream?  I have seen the "all 100% natural" food colorings derived from pure vegetable juices and spices - but I haven't tried these.   Does anyone know if these are less likely to alter the taste of the Vanilla Buttercream?  Thanks in advance for any comments!  &lt;3

What if you don’t have paddle but a regular hand mixer.   Will that make a difference ?

Perfect instructions given. Thank you. I would like to know how can I make buttercream frosting stiff with not too sweet. Since you have mentioned about powdered sugar which is very sweet, how can I make it less sweet? Trying to experiment a lot in buttercream frosting, can I add melted white chocolate to make it more stiff? Also I saw in you tube using CMC to stiffen whipped cream. I live in India and it's hot climate. My clients prefer less sweet frosting.  SMBF is less sweet but cannot hold for long. Please help

I have found that it tastes so much better when I use salted butter. And I'm not someone who puts salt on my food or anything. Without it just tastes like sweet fat.

Absolutely delicious! One question: how do you store the cakes and/or cupcakes once they have been frosted? Does it need to go in the fridge if they won't be eaten all in one day?
