Sloppy Joes

Worcestershire sauces

Add beef to a large pan over medium heat. Season with salt and pepper. Cook, crumbling and stirring, until browned. Remove grease.

Add onion and garlic and cook for a few minutes. Stir in remaining ingredients.

Simmer for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serve warm, inside a toasted hamburger bun.

We make Gourmet Sloppy Joes without ketchup. But, they do have a touch of elegance from red wine vinegar and fresh veggies in the sauce. Easy dinner that will become a family favorite.

Gourmet Sloppy Joes (without ketchup!)

olive oil

onion

bell peppers (sliced

garlic

tomato sauce (2 cans)

tomato paste (1 can, with 2 Tablespoons removed)

red wine vinegar

Worcestershire sauce

brown sugar (or sugar substitute)

Hamburger bun, baguette, low-carb bread or lettuce

Add uncooked beef to a large skillet and cook over medium heat for about 5 minutes or until browned and cooked through, crumbling beef with a wooden spoon or spatula as it cooks. Transfer meat to a paper-towel lined plate to soak up any extra fat. Wipe excess fat out of the pan. If you have crumbles already prepared, skip this step.

Heat 1 Tablespoon olive oil over medium heat in a large skillet.

Add onions, peppers, and garlic and sauté for 5 minutes or until vegetables are softened.

Add tomato sauce, tomato paste, red wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and brown sugar to the pan and stir to combine.

Simmer for about 5 minutes to wake-up the tomato sauce and allow the sauce ingredients to combine.

Stir in crumbled ground beef and simmer for about 5 minutes more.

Spoon over bread choice and enjoy.

I have tried many times to make sloppy joes from scratch and never found a recipe that was just right... until now! I'm super picky about my sloppy joes. This one checked all the boxes. Not too sweet, perfect consistency, and great depth of flavor. I did modify it a bit. I used 2.25 lb ground beef (96% ), and 1.5 cans of tomato sauce with italian herbs. The tomato paste also had italian herbs in it. I also added some red pepper flakes. The tomatoes added just enough sweetness was so I didn't add no sugar needed. Thank you for this great recipe!

I know this recipe is older but I just made these last night and loved them!

I didn't grow up eating sloppy joes so I have never been much of a fan, but my husband did and has been craving them. I googled a ketchup-free recipe (though you're basically making your own here, ha) and found yours. We both agreed these were great (and took soooo little time to make!) 

My only change was to add a hefty pinch of salt and a dash of paprika when stirring in the tomato sauce/paste and other liquids.

I love recipes like this that you can make several meals worth and freeze the extra. Such a great time saver!

I haven't had sloppy joe's like this since I was a kid!
