Whisk the flour, paprika, cayenne, cumin, thyme and oregano in a large bowl. In a medium deep bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, and 1 cup water.

Place the onion in a clean bowl, cut-side up, and pour the flour mixture on top. Using a large spoon to coat the onion with the flour mixture, especially between the onion petals. Turn the onion over and pat off the excess flour.  Reserve the bowl of flour.

Put the onion in the egg mixture and coat evenly. Remove and let the excess drip off.

Then transfer the onion back into the reserved...

Then transfer the onion back into the reserved flour mixture and repeat the flouring process. Be sure you gently tap off extra flour. There will be leftover flour in the bowl when you are done.

Make this restaurant quality appetizer at home. A blooming onion looks difficult, but it is easy to make.

These vegan blooming onion petals are lightly battered onion pieces deep-fried to crunchy perfection and served with a spicy aioli for dipping. These taste exactly like a blooming onion, except they are much easier to make!

How to Make Vegan Blooming Onion Petals

vegetable or canola oil, (for deep frying)

*Optional: TRUFF truffle oil, (for drizzling on the fried onions)

tbsp smoked paprika

garlic powder

tsp cumin

tsp kosher salt, (plus more for sprinkling on top)

tsp black pepper

soy milk

water

tbsp liquid Just Egg

sauce

mayonnaise

ketchup

Add all of the ingredients into a wide, shallow bowl and whisk until evenly combined.

Dry Batter

Wet Batter

Preheat the vegetable oil in a medium-sized saucepot to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Please use a thermometer to get a precise temperature.

Cut the onion in half through the root. Then, cut the ends off of the onion halves and remove the outer skin.

Lay the onion down flat, with one of the cut ends facing you, and cut through the top three times, angling the knife towards the center each time to create a petal look. Then, peel the pieces apart so they are individual petals.

Line a sheet pan with a piece of parchment paper. Line another sheet pan with a couple of layers of paper towel.

To batter the onions, first, place a few into the dry batter and toss them to coat them lightly. The batter will not stick to the onions a lot this first time. Then, evenly coat them in the wet batter. Lastly, evenly coat them in the dry batter once more. So, it&#39;s dry batter-wet batter-dry batter. Then, place them on the sheet pan with the parchment paper.

To deep fry the battered onions, carefully drop 5 to 6 of them into the oil and cook them for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes, flipping them over halfway through. Then, using a slotted metal spoon, remove the onions and place them on the prepared sheet pan of paper towels.

Lightly season the fried onions with salt. If desired (I highly recommend this step), drizzle TRUFF&#39;s truffle oil over the fried onion petals just before serving. I also like to drizzle a little bit into my spicy aioli!

Repeat the battering and frying steps with the rest of the onions!

How to Batter and Fry the Onions

Add all of the ingredients into a small bowl and stir until well combined.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Use a large knife to cut off the top about 1/4-inch of the onion until a few of the inside layers are exposed. Be careful to cut the top side, not the root side. Peel the outermost layer of the onion down to the root, leaving the root as is.

Lay the onion cut side down on the cutting board. Then use a knife to section the onion into 16ths, beginning with your knife 1/8-inch away from the root and cutting straight down. You can cut more sections if you have an especially large onion. Once all cuts are complete, turn the onion over and set on a piece of parchment paper on a baking sheet. The onion will fall open, but you' ll also want to use your fingers to separate the onion petals and open it completely.

In a small bowl, combine panko, paprika, Cajun seasoning, and salt. Whisk the egg whites together in a separate bowl.

To coat the onion, I started in sections. I would coat each onion petal with egg whites and then sprinkle liberally with the panko mixture. I worked from the bottom to the top in each section, and then turned the onion to work on the next section. I brushed the entire onion with one more layer of egg white and sprinkled the mixture over the entire onion once done with the sections.

Bake covered with aluminum foil for 5 minutes, then uncovered for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the onion is tender and the edges are browned.

Bite-Sized Blooming Onions

Prep onions by slicing off the root end. Slice off as little as possible. Carefully peel onions. Use a sharp knife to cut the onion into eighths, vertically, being careful not to cut all the way through the onion so it stays together. I think it&#8217;s best to leave what was the tip end intact.

After you slice each onion, press on it gently to separate the sections. Toss all the prepped onions in the buttermilk and egg mixture. Let them sit for at least 5-10 minutes to soak. You could also prep the onions in advance and let them marinate overnight.

Stir together flour with paprika, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and cayenne. Remove onions from buttermilk mixture and dust heavily with flour mixture. Be sure to get it in all the cracks of the onions so they &#8220;bloom&#8221; a bit as they fry. Move coated onions to a clean plate.

Heat frying oil to 350 degrees F. Fry bite-sized onions for about 4 minutes until they are golden brown. Remove onions and let drain for a minute. Serve while hot with dipping sauce!
