These vegan blooming onion petals are lightly battered onion pieces deep-fried to crunchy perfection and served with a spicy aioli for dipping. These taste exactly like a blooming onion, except they are much easier to make!

How to Make Vegan Blooming Onion Petals

sweet onion

vegetable or canola oil, (for deep frying)

*Optional: TRUFF truffle oil, (for drizzling on the fried onions)

all-purpose flour

tbsp smoked paprika

garlic powder

cayenne pepper

tsp cumin

thyme

oregano

tsp kosher salt, (plus more for sprinkling on top)

tsp black pepper

soy milk

water

tbsp liquid Just Egg

sauce

mayonnaise

ketchup

Add all of the ingredients into a wide, shallow bowl and whisk until evenly combined.

Dry Batter

Wet Batter

Preheat the vegetable oil in a medium-sized saucepot to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Please use a thermometer to get a precise temperature.

Cut the onion in half through the root. Then, cut the ends off of the onion halves and remove the outer skin.

Lay the onion down flat, with one of the cut ends facing you, and cut through the top three times, angling the knife towards the center each time to create a petal look. Then, peel the pieces apart so they are individual petals.

Line a sheet pan with a piece of parchment paper. Line another sheet pan with a couple of layers of paper towel.

To batter the onions, first, place a few into the dry batter and toss them to coat them lightly. The batter will not stick to the onions a lot this first time. Then, evenly coat them in the wet batter. Lastly, evenly coat them in the dry batter once more. So, it&#39;s dry batter-wet batter-dry batter. Then, place them on the sheet pan with the parchment paper.

To deep fry the battered onions, carefully drop 5 to 6 of them into the oil and cook them for 2 1/2 to 3 minutes, flipping them over halfway through. Then, using a slotted metal spoon, remove the onions and place them on the prepared sheet pan of paper towels.

Lightly season the fried onions with salt. If desired (I highly recommend this step), drizzle TRUFF&#39;s truffle oil over the fried onion petals just before serving. I also like to drizzle a little bit into my spicy aioli!

Repeat the battering and frying steps with the rest of the onions!

Spicy Aioli

This Bloomin Onion recipe transforms a large sweet onion into a crispy, golden fried appetizer with a flavorful seasoned batter and a tangy dipping sauce. Perfect as a crowd-pleasing starter, the onion is carefully cut, soaked in ice water for maximum bloom, coated in a spiced flour and egg batter, and deep-fried to perfection.

Prep Onion

Cut off ½ inch from the top of the onion and peel away the outer skin. Place the onion cut-side down on a cutting board. Starting about ½ inch from the root, make a downward cut all the way through to the board.

Make Cuts

Repeat to make four evenly spaced cuts around the onion. Then make 3 additional cuts between each section, resulting in 16 evenly spaced cuts. This creates the bloom effect when fried.

Soak Onion

Place the cut onion in a bowl of ice water, cut side down, and let it soak for 2 hours to encourage the petals to open fully. Afterward, remove and gently dab dry for better adhesion of the breading.

Prepare Flour Mixture

In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, cayenne pepper, ground cumin, dried thyme, dried oregano, kosher salt, and white pepper.

Prepare Wet Batter

In a separate medium deep bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and water until fully combined.

Dredge Onion - First Flour Coat

Place the onion cut-side up in a clean bowl and spoon the dry flour mixture all over the onion, ensuring it gets into all the nooks and crannies. Tap off excess flour and reserve for later use.

Dredge Onion - Wet Batter

Turn the onion cut side down and dip it into the wet batter, then lift and return it to the bowl with the flour mixture. Spoon the flour mixture over the top again, thoroughly coating the entire onion.

Set Onion

Place the coated onion in the refrigerator for about 10 minutes to allow the batter to set. During this time, prepare your frying oil.

Heat Oil

In a high-sided Dutch oven or deep fryer, heat vegetable or peanut oil to 400°F (204°C). Use enough oil to fully submerge the onion.

Fry Onion

Remove the onion from the refrigerator and gently shake off any excess flour to prevent burning. Using a wire skimmer, lower the onion cut side down into the hot oil. Monitor the oil temperature, which will drop to around 350°F (177°C) upon adding the onion, and maintain that temperature throughout frying.

Cook and Turn

Fry the onion until golden brown and crispy, about 8–9 minutes, turning halfway through so the root side is down for even cooking.

Drain

Remove the fried onion from the oil with the wire skimmer and place it on paper towels to drain excess oil.

Serve

Serve the Bloomin Onion hot, paired with your favorite dipping sauce.
