Butter Naan is a popular Indian flatbread made with all purpose flour (maida). Make this soft and fluffy butter naan at home on tawa.

Maida (all purpose flour

baking powder

baking soda

sugar

salt

yoghurt (curd)

milk

vegetable oil

Making dough for butter naan

In a mixing bowl add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar and salt. Mix them nicely. Add yoghurt and milk. Then pour water slowly and start to knead. Make a soft and palpable dough.

Grease the oil and knead further for 2 minutes. Make sure the dough is not sticky. Cover and keep aside for 10 minutes to set.

Making dough balls

After 10 minutes divide the into small parts and roll them between the palm of hands to make round shape balls. Let them to set for 5 minutes.

Take a dough ball and dust with some flour. Then with a roller pin roll into round shape thin circle. Grease some oil over it and sprinkle flour on it. Now start creating pleats by folding with the help of fingers. Stretch the pleated dough and roll like a Swiss roll. Secure the end by pressing gently. Keep it to rest to set for 5 minutes.

After that apply some flour and start to roll in oval shape around 5 to 6 inch long and 3 to 4 inch wide.

Making garlic butter naan

Dust a dough ball with flour and roll into a small round shape circle. Then place some finely chopped garlic over it and sprinkle few chopped coriander leaves.

Press them gently and roll again in length wise around 5 to 6 inch long and 3 to 4 inch wide. Make it like oval shaped.

Heat a tawa (griddle) over medium high heat flame. When the tawa become hot, grease some water over one side of the rolled butter naan dough and place over the tawa. Keep the water side down on the tawa.

Press the edges lightly and when small bubbles start to appear flip the tawa and place over the gas flame.

Cook it for 2 minutes or till small golden spot appears over it. Now flip the tawa back on the gas stove and cook further for a minute.

Remove and apply butter over the naan and serve hot with curries and gravies.

After rolling the garlic butter naan dough, apply some water on back side of it and place that side on the hot tawa. And press it from all sides.

Cook it for one minute or till small bubbles appears.

Now flip the tawa and place over the gas flame and cook the garlic butter naan

When small brown spot appears and the naan become nicely cooked flip the back on the gas stove. Cook for 1 minute and then remove to serve hot buyer garlic naan

Cup Plain Yogurt

Tablespoons Unsalted Butter ((softened))

Cups All-Purpose Flour

Tablespoon White Granulated Sugar

Teaspoons Salt

Teaspoons Bread Machine Yeast

Unplug your bread machine and remove the bread pan.

Add the water, yogurt, butter and then the rest of the ingredients into the bread pan. You can make a little indent on top of the flour in order to avoid the yeast falling into the water (until the machine starts). Do not combine the salt with the yeast (as the salt can kill the yeast). Place the yeast &amp; salt in separate parts of the bread pan.

Place the bread pan (with ingredients) into the bread machine and then plug in the machine.

Put your machine on the Dough setting and press the start button. In our Sunbeam bread machine, the kneading &amp; rising on the dough setting takes about approximately 1:30 hours.

When your bread machine has finished, unplug the machine &amp; pour the naan dough onto a cutting board. Wear oven mitts (as the bread pan/bread machine may be hot).

Sprinkle some flour on the cutting board (before you pour out the naan dough) in order to avoid the naan dough sticking to the cutting board.

Divide &amp; shape the naan dough into fist-sized balls. You should be able to make roughly 8-10 balls of dough.

Sprinkle a little flour on the balls to prevent sticking.

Use a rolling pin to roll the dough balls flat. Try to create flat circles or ovals from the dough that are roughly 1/4 inch high. However, irregular naan shapes are okay too!!

I like to roll out one dough ball at time and then fry each one separately (versus rolling all 8-10 balls at once and then frying later).

Heat a frying pan with low/medium heat and melt a thin tab of butter on the frying pan.

Place the flattened naan dough on top of the melted butter in the frying pan.

Flip the naan frequently with a metal spatula in order to brown the naan evenly (and avoid burning the naan). The frying should only take 1-3 minutes per naan (depending on the level of heat used).

Add more butter to the frying pan when you fry each new naan.

Place the naan on a wire cooling rack for a minute to cool down slightly.

Serve while naan still warm.

This recipe of Butter Naan does not require a traditional tandoor (a clay oven) to cook it. It is also a simpler and healthier version that is made with whole wheat flour and is brushed with butter before serving.

In a bowl, take the instant yeast, sugar. Add water and stir the mixture to dissolve the sugar and yeast granules.

Then add 1 cup whole wheat flour and stir or whisk it with the rest of the yeast mixture.

Cover and keep aside to leaven for 40 to 45 minutes.

Then add the remaining whole wheat flour, salt, softened butter and curd/yogurt. Knead to a soft, pliable and smooth dough.

If the dough become sticky, add a few tablespoons of flour and knead again. If its dry, then add some more water.

Cover the naan dough and keep aside for 25 to 30 minutes.

Divide the dough into medium balls.

Give a resting time for the dough balls for about 15 to 20 minutes. Cover and keep aside.

Making Buttery Dough

Lightly dust the dough balls with some flour.&nbsp;

You can also sprinkle some sesame seeds or nigella seeds on the dough ball and then roll it.

Roll into a small to medium sized rounds of medium thickness.

Assembling and Rolling

Place the rolled flat bread on a hot tawa or flat skillet. Keep the heat to medium-high to high.

When the bottom is partly cooked, flip. You will see many air pockets on the naan.

When the second side is half cooked, remove the naan with a pair of tongs and place the side which was cooked first facing the fire.

The naan may puff up. Flip and brown the second side also. Ensure the naan is cooked well but don&#39;t over roast it.

Place the hot naan in a roti basket or casserole. Spread some softened butter on top.

Make all butter naans this way in batches. If not serving straight away, then stack them in the roti basket.

Or else you can serve Butter Naan immediately.
